Doug,

Sorry for the delay in posting these. There are scans of a State Prize.

Take care,
Ed

I enjoy this detailed discussion of the different Prize Medals.

Were the three classes of the State Prize issued only as replacements for Stalin Prizes or were they awarded on their own rights also?

How do the single-class State Prize and the Lenin Prize fit into this awards series (importance and timing)?

Dietrich,

Here's a State Prize 2nd class from 1962, that was not awarded on it's own. The original Prize is from 1952.

If one got Stalin prize, why it was replaced by state prize and not the Lenin prize?

Also, when was the design cahnge made in the state prize 1st class?

Here is some more info on this, taken from the Herfurth book, assuming I've read the German correctly:

The Lenin prize medal was awarded in only one class. Made from Gold.

The Stalin prize medal was awarded in three classes from 1940-1952. The first class is gold.

The State prize medals were awarded in three classes, the first class again in gold. The original first class was later replaced by the other design, again from gold.

There also exists the Stalin and Lenin Peace medals, of which there is only one class, again, both from gold.

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards,
Shane Cook.

Here is a summary of information on this subject collected from responses here and from the Herfurth catalog:

1. Lenin Prize, initiated in 1925, awarded every other year in quantity of 30, (Herfurth does not list a closure date. Can it still be awarded today?).

2. Stalin Prize, three classes, awarded 1940 - 1952.

3. State Prize, three classes, awarded in 1962 as Stalin Prize replacement (per Alexei's document and another document by newworld. Herfurth incorrectly lists 1966 as year of initiation).

4. State Prize, single class, awarded between 1968 and 1991 in quantity of 60 to 70 prizes per year (I assume that is what Herfurth means. He does not provide a clear distinction between the Three-Class and the Single-Class State Prize.).

Here are open questions:
a. What requirement had to be met for the Lenin Prize and which for the Stalin and State Prize? How did the recipients differ?
b. There is a hole in the dates. Were no Prizes awarded between 1952 and 1962?
c. Was the Three-Class State Prize awarded between 1962 and 1968 without being a replacement for the Stalin Prize?

New World,

Soviet award documents were often vague when given for defense projects, and I think this is a perfect example - "for work in the field of manufacturing special instruments". Nice!

Interesting case of awarding the State Prize:

a group of 12 people were awarded, but the Diploma was given to just one person.

Does anyone know if each person received the diploma and the medal?

What happened to the $$$$ portion of the prize - was it split between the members, or did they just go to a restaurant all together and had nice celebration?

Who got the Medal?

I think in that case themen was a team at some factory, and as a team they got a collective prize.
I know about several cases in Israel, where teams got a collective "Israel's security prize", but each got his own insignia.
