Hymn Of The Soviet Union.

I am SURE that you have the national anthem of CCCP on your HD and you listen to it every day....But here are the words - in Russian - and with a little knowledge about the Cyrillic letters you will be able to sing it yourself soon...

Unbreakable Union of freeborn Republics,
Great Russia has welded forever to stand.
Created in struggle by will of the people,
United and mighty, our Soviet land!

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

Through tempests the sunrays of freedom have cheered us,
Along the new path where great Lenin did lead.
To a righteous cause he raised up the peoples,
Inspired them to labor and valorous deed.
[Or, the old way:
Be true to the people, thus Stalin has reared us,
Inspire us to labor and valorous deed!]

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

In the victory of Communism's deathless ideal,
We see the future of our dear land.
And to her fluttering scarlet banner,
Selflessly true we always shall stand!

And, then, for the non-Russian-speaking, there is the Paul Robeson version. Powerful....

I like hearing it sung by the Red Star Red Army Chorus. Excellent.

I think this is the Paul Robeson....

United Forever in Friendship and Labour,
Our mighty Republics will ever endure.
The Great Soviet Union will Live through the Ages.
The Dream of a People their fortress secure.

Long Live our Soviet Motherland,
Built by the People's mighty hand.
Long Live our People, United and Free.
Strong in our Friendship tried by fire.
Long may our Crimson Flag Inspire,
Shining in Glory for all Men to see.

Through Days dark and stormy where Great Lenin Lead us
Our Eyes saw the Bright Sun of Freedom above
and Stalin our Leader with Faith in the People,
Inspired us to Build up the Land that we Love.

Chorus

We fought for the Future, destroyed the invader,
and Brought to our Homeland the Laurels of Fame.
Our Glory will live in the Memory of Nations
and All Generations will Honour Her Name.

Chorus

Or, you could be thinking of The Internationale.......

Yes, this is the Robeson. Earlier postings prompted me to drag out my MP3 file of it (as well as other versions).

Translation <100% (I am told), but sentiments >100%?

Anyone else like to listen to the military music? Such as the March of The Soviet Artillerists, Tankists, Air Force, etc.? Some good stuff, sung by the Red Army Choir.

I am a musician myself and have studied a lot of the Russian patriotic music. It fascinates me how powerful it all is...

I Wanted to Ask About the Anthem. . .

How is it that when translated from Russian into English the words still seem to rhyme? Was there some linguistic leeway given or do the words actually correspond to both languages? I'm amazed if they do, as it appears to be a huge coincidence!

Gene,

No coincidence, it's not a very good translation.
