Re: How to store medals
But vinegar would remove plating... Is there any other way? And if you want to do good cleaning would you use a warm water and soap bath before or after?
Is it a good idea to apply tiny bit of vegetable oil on a medal after cleaning to give it a good protection? |

Re: How to store medals
I've never had trouble using vinegar sparingly.
Vegetable oil is organic and also decomposes so it's not a good idea.

Re: How to store medals
Vinegar will remove nothing but the verdigris. Patina may dissapear when you soak it, but will appear again soon, just as before. I´ve never had any problems with vinegar neither regarding patina and plating.

Re: How to store medals
Hi fellas,
I got this medal and it was very dirty, had rust, and a couple verdigris spots. So I placed it in a warm water bath and squeezed some lemon juice in. I soaked it like this for a few hours. Then I washed it with warm water with soap and brushed with a tooth brush and some tooth paste. Then I properly washed it with water. I'm happy that almost all crap came off the medal. But I'm not particularly happy that the color of the medal got very bright. The plating that is left lost it's yellowness. In addition, some spots turned into some kind of pink color as you can see in the pics. Did I keep it in the water-lemon juice bath for too long? Do you have any recommendations? |

Re: How to store medals
Looks fine, the "pink" will go within a few months. I've "played" with different clean techniques and the pink always turns back to the original colour after exposure to air.
