Researching Mongolian Awards.
Im sure the answer to my first question is no, but I will ask anyway.
Q1. Is it possible to research Mongolian orders? I have it in my head that only Soviet orders can be researched is this correct? I have just bought a Mongolian Polar star order and would be very interested to find out if I could find out more about the recipient. Q2. Are there any Other commmunist/ Soviet block countries who's orders you can research? Thanks Mark |

Hi Mark,
I haven't heard of any research possibilities for Mongolian awards, this of course doesn't mean there is no way to find out details, I just don't know any offhand. High Polish orders can be researched, for example for the Order of Virtuti Militari there is a special web site for tracing. You can find out if a relative or friend has been awarded this Order. With the Monte Cassino Cross it is exactly the opposite Official documentation including a list of recipients will never be known. Some records have been located which indicate blocks of crosses by serial number distributed to specific units but not to a lone member of the Polish Army. The recipiants of the Hero Stars of many of the Soviet Bloc countries has it's own research thread, here the link : http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=3143 Once the name has been found it should be possible to find out more details at least in theory. Eddie.

BTW, did Monglia ever send "advisors" or the like into Korea or Vietnam during those wars? If they did, I could see why their awards vault is off-limits. |

Surplus Mongolian awards have started to show up because someone at the mint saw the profit in them. I don't doubt that someday soon, someone at the archives will see the financial incentive to start doing research.
My guess is that they are kept under lock and key because, as in most bureacracies, something is kept hidden only because no one has made the decision to open them up. Once such a decision is made, then I'm sure researchers will start to have access to these records (I think we can all agree that they do exist..why maintain serial numbers on awards if you're not going to keep a record of them?)

Researching Mongolian ODM
Does anyone know if there have been any breakthroughs in the researching of Mongolian ODM? Will it be possible to research awards in the near future? Also, will it be possible to research civilian awards or only military ones? I am just curious...and hopeful.

Yes, the breakthrough has happened but it is a very sensitive topic with permanent risk of set backs. See some other recent posts of mine on this forum. Critical is having the award booklet (serial number + name + date of awarding) although, while much more difficult, it may be possible to also research based on serial number alone. From what I understand: - Research on Order of Sukh Baatar is possible (in particular screwbacks) - Research on Order of Red Banner of Labor is possible for serial nr <500 - Others: unclear right now What research then uncovers is still something to learn and may depend case by case (e.g. in some cases photographs and complete biographies are also possible). Fingers crossed. Last edited by CtahhR; 02-13-2012 at 11:11 AM. |

Re: Researching Mongolian ODM
Do you think the Ministry of Defense will open up their records for archival research as well? I think it is interesting that research is available for the civilian orders, since the opposite seems to be the case with Soviet ODM. Have you heard anything about being able to research Polar Stars?
