Gold Star "Hero Of Socialist Labour".

Was the title Hero of Socialist Labor given to military personal? and if it was, was it given in WWII?

Stalin himself was awarded serial number 1, in 1939.:) also, check out the Hero of Socialist labor medal in that picture of Brezhnev I posted. The award requirements were far less stringent after WWII, which led to a loss of prestige for the award ( similar as to what happened with the Order of Lenin ).

The award was given to weapons designers, nuclear scientists, etc..just so long as it furthered the development of socialism. So I guess there wouldn't be a problem with it being awarded to military personnel so long as the requirments of the award was met.

Dear Art,
dear Frieza,

till to the end of the war this title was much rarer than the HSU, because there were only about 300 Heros of Socialist Labour till that time. About 20.700 had been conferred, 180 a second time and 16 a third time (with II or III at the medal).

At the end of the fourthies the government made a deal with the collective farmers: For certain quantities of harvest they will get - Red Banner of Labour, Lenin or Hero of Socialist Labour. So this blew up the statistic very, very much. Also Gorbacev and his father got orders for harvesting: Son - Red Banner of Labour and father - Lenin. I think this early and high decoration was very decesive for Gorbacev's further career in Komsomol and party. But Gorbacev never was awarded Hero of Socialist Labour (Gromyko twice).

Regards from Vienna

An Observation About Hero of Labor Variations

I have noticed that there are more variations in the Type 2 than just 1, 2, and 3; there are also "thin" and "thick" variations. As you can see, the difference is quite significant (up to 1 gram in weight). The "thick" medals are earlier issues. I am not sure when they have switched to "thin" medals production, but I have never seen a "thick" medal with serial number in the 10,XXX range.

Alexei,

I once owned Gold Star for Hero of Socialist Labor #9577, dated 1966. Sounds like these awards fell victim to the economization of the 1960's also :(

Chris,

Your 2 grams were stolen by Kruschev. :)

The diference between them should be about 1.5 - 2.0 grams.

Looks like as the HSL stars got thinner and thinner, they kept the base and hammer & sickle sizes the same, resulting in a "disconnect" at the tip of the sickle. Here's one of the thicker stars, note that the tip of the sickle and the edge of the star form a continuous plane

Here is a later, thinner variation. There is a break between the tip of the sickle and the edge of the star
