What you're showing is 1970's emission of the Dimitrov Prize Laureate medal for Arts and Science - 1st Class.

Background on Dimitrov Prize medal:

Instituted: On 23th May 1949 by decree of the Presidium of the Great Assembly.

Given to: People who receive the title "laureate" for their achievements in science, techniques and culture.

Form: circle with 26 mm diameter. At first it was made of bronze, later (after 1960) made of gold. Avers: a relief of the left profile of Georgy Dimitrov. To the right and below of the image there is a laurel wig. Reverse: a star with five angels. Below is the inscription LAUREATE OF DIMITROV’S PRIZE, the year of the achievement and the stage - first, second and third (stages were noticed till 1960). The badge is carried on a bar of metal, which is worn across by a red ribbon.

Classes: The title had three stages, which were canceled in 1960. After 1960 the title has only one stage made of gold.

Emissions: On the first emission with words where marked the class of the title, respectively first, second and third class.

Author: prof. Luben Dimitrov

Awarded: 724 people.

Emission closed: 1990

Source: book Bulgarian Communist Orders and Medals, 1945-2002

The medal Tal's showing is made of solid 14 karat gold and weighs about 25 grams.

Extremely scarce and rare Bulgarian award.

Only about 50 or so awardees have received this 1970 issue.

Here is the 1962 - 1964 issue of the Dimitrov Laureate medal for Arts and Science - 1st Class.

The medal was established in end of May 1949. This issue has the year printed in relief at back.

The medal is solid 14 karat gold and weighs about 25 grams of gold also marked at top of the rim near the hook.

Extremely scarce and rare Bulgarian award decoration. The medal was awarded to people of art and science and only about 20 persons have received this 1962-64 issue.

Only few such medals known to exist in collections.

This is the Georgi Dimitrov Bulgarian Communist 1970ies issue of the Dimitrov Laureate solid gold medal for Arts and Science - 1st Class.
The medal was established in end of May 1949. This issue doesn't have the year printed in relief at back. The medal is solid 14 karat gold and weighs about 17.6 gr. Extremely scarce and rare Bulgarian award decoration. The medal was awarded to people of art and science and only about 50 or so persons have received this 1970 issue. Furthermore, during that period of time not only a single person received the award, but it was also possible that a group of people received only one piece.

Eddie.

1. Svetlin Roussev (Bulgarian)- Awarded in 1969 for his painting Oath.
2. Cyril Popov (Bulgarian) - Academic - Awarded in ?

Fellows,

For your viewing pleasure - two Dimitrov Prize medals awarded to the same person. Both are from 1950. Recipient was famous Bulgarian actor and movie star.

Dimitrov medals are 1st and 2nd class, come with huge documents and are part of large group awards to the same person.

Dimitrov Prize was extremely rare awards, it's almost impossible to find these with documents. What makes this set especially rare is the fact that they were both given in the same year to the same person!!!

View of awards and documents in the group.

Note two oversized documents for Dimitrov Prize and tubes to store them.

Georgiy Dimitrov and other orders are of early emissions with serial numbers engraved on the reverse.

William,
my Bulgaria encyclopedia, published 1983 in East Germany, has a short paragraph about the actor Ivan Dimov: born 1897, died 1965, schooled as actor at the National Theatre in Sofia where he played many leading rolls between 1922 and 1961. He is also famous for his rolls in movies. (The little country of 8 million people had a movie industry?)

The encyclopedia lists only his Dimitrov Prize, not the Dimitrov Order as it does for other persons. The badge in front of the picture was awarded by the police. I wonder whether that really belongs in the group unless he was rewarded for a special acting roll glamorizing police work.

Dietrich,

Dimitrov order definitely belonged to Dimov. All these awards came as a single lot from the family.

Badge on the front looks like Police, but it's not. It's Honorary Member of City of Sofia Community. It's accompanied by the award document, ID card and a case.

Re: Dimitrov Prize

What's the current price on one of these? I have access to one that was never awarded, but sold by the bank after the fall of the communist regime.
