Actually, that's not his personal signature. Somebody else had signed the document for him.

Guards Lieutenant Popov - signed on Apr 13, 1946 by the commander of the 13th Guards Krasnoye Selo Red Banner Bomber Aviation Regiment, a Guards Lieutenant Colonel
The second document to him has him as a Guards Senior Lieutenant, with the doc signed on Jun 26, 1949 by the commander of military unit nr. 21977, a Guards Lieutenant Colonel (the same LtCol as the one on the VoG doc, but I can't read his name)

His rank was captain.
The doc was signed by colonel Rozanov, head of the ???? (vsevod. voenn. obuch. - no idea what this stands for, but I just got up) squad unit of the Lvov Military district.
