Re: Red Army Soldier/Educator Evsej Aleksandrovich Nakashidze.

I love these mixed military and labor groupings. I do not know if I understand the difference in the Valiant and Distinguished Labor medals? Did one hold more weight that the other? I read the book on medals(Red one), and it still seems sorta foggy for me to differentiate the criteria between the two.

When used as long service awards the "For Distinction" was usually for 5/10 years and the "For Valour" was usually for 10/15 years. Apart from that the differences aren't overwhelming.

Did there ever used to be a difference, when they were first established?

Re: Red Army Soldier/Educator Evsej Aleksandrovich Nakashidze.

For Labour Distinction
"an impact on work conducive to the growth of labour productivity and improvement in product quality, for achievements in the socialist competition;
contribution to the construction or reconstruction of major economic projects;
valuable innovations and rationalization proposals;
successful work in the field of science, culture, literature, the arts, education, health, trade, catering, housing, utilities, public services, or in other areas of employment;
active work in the communist education and training of young people, for success in public and social activities;
achievements in the field of physical culture and sports"

For Labour Valour
"selfless and creative work, for surpassing norms, targets and socialist obligations, for increased productivity and improvements in product quality;
effective use of new technologies and the development of advanced technologies, for valuable innovations and rationalization proposals;
achievements in science, culture, literature, the arts, education, health, trade, catering, housing and communal services, public services, in other areas of employment;
fruitful work in the communist education and training of young people, for successful public and social activities;
achievements in the field of physical culture and sports"

If I were told to award someone a labour award how would I know which to and which not to award out of the choice?

Off the top of my head (plus a quick read of that description), the Valiant Labor medal has a more active, practical quality than the Distinguished Labor medal, similar to a Bravery Medal vs. a Combat Service Medal.

But this is a guess. Anyone have proof one way or another?

Officially the Medal for Distinguished Labor was given for 10 years of service and the Medal for Valiant Labor for 15 years of service.

The Ukaz of 1948-02-12 states 5/10 years for the Medals when in more "risky" non-ferrous metal situations.
