Question/Identification of Uniform and Medals

Hello. I acquired the following Soviet Army Uniform back in late 2001 while traveling through Uzbekistan. I don't know ANYTHING about it....what drew me to the purchase was the price and I thought it would be a "cool" thing to get while in that part of the world.

Anyways, I'm hoping someone here can help me identify the following:

Rank/Grade
Ribbons
Badges (Awards)
Medals

Also, if anyone can tell me if the order of precedence appears to be correct along with the medals. Thanks for your assistance.

Re: Question/Identification of Uniform and Medals

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

What you have is a parade-walkout uniform of a general-major of the infantry, model 1969-1991. This uniform was not worn with the awards at all, just the ribbons (and some specific decorations). The awards you have mounted on the set should not be there at all - you can better remove them. The ribbon bar that is on the set may be original to the uniform but it is mounted way wrong onto the chest - and upside down.

The awards you have are
- Order of the Red Star (right side)
- Order of the Patriotic War 1st and 2nd class, 1985 issues. (right side)
- Medals (Victory over Germany + some anniversary medals) left side.
... too bad if the screwback awards are punched through the cloth.

Attached is a pic of a set I used to own.

Tretov - thanks for the quick reply. I was worried that some of the stuff on the uniform may not belong there as I know that would decrease it's overall value. It actually makes me wonder now how much that is there was awarded to it's original owner....somehow though I have a suspicious feeling that the street vendor I got it from just threw some stuff on it.

He probably did to make it look impressive. If I were you, I would clean it from the stuff, have the holes from the awards repaired by a tailor and either adjust the present ribbon bar alternatively get another more suitable one or just keep it without the bar. I can help if needed :)

Re: Question/Identification of Uniform and Medals

It would have to be quite an interesting story for someone who won an order of glory while an enlisted man in the GPW to finish out as a general. I'm not saying it didn't happen but with the upside down ribbon bar, I suspect this came off someone else's uniform. They do have a period look to them and, even though a few seem out of place, could conceivably belong to a vet who updated it as late as 1975 (but before 1978).

Actually, the bar is 1975 (see Victory anniversary of 1975!) :)

Re: Question/Identification of Uniform and Medals

Agreed, this can be an excellent uniform once fixed up and extraneous items removed. The nearly randomly placed anniversary of the armed forces and victory over Germany medal aren't worth much so I suppose the seller thought he'd make it "look better" by adding them.

It will look considerably better (and gain value) when it is returned to normal. If you get a ribbon bar from someone who was very heavily decorated (as most generals were) they might even reach far enough down to cover a couple of those holes.:)

Re: Question/Identification of Uniform and Medals

Actually, this ribbon bar, if considered original, could also cover at least 2 of the 3 holes that will be left after the awards are removed, as it should be worn on this uniform 7cm below lapel angle, which will be a little lower than lapel's button hole.
