This uniform appears to have been one of Gorshkov's from the period 1976-1977 or thereabouts. The HSU stars are probably fake (or "wearing copies") and he wouldn't have worn two stars on this uniform, but I'd bet that the uniform was probably his, being in the museum.

Back in 1992, I bought a uniform identical to this, save for the addition of his second two lenins (to make seven). I owned it for several years, finally selling it. It was all 1960's dated, and it showed considerable wear, both on the jacket, the shoulder boards, and the ribbons. I was told by the seller that it was the only Gorshkov uniform outside of a museum or family.

Was it really? I don't know, and when I sold it, it was simply sold as a "Admiral of the Fleet" uniform, nothing more.

Unusual Ribbon Group

I've been meaning to post this group up for a while, but finally decided to... :)

This group of ribbons belonged to a Lieutenant Colonel tankist, who served during the Patriotic War and became one of the many "reserve" officers after the War. I am lucky enough to own all of his awards (though they are few) as well as many other documents, photos, and his ribbons.

The ribbons are unusual because of the last ribbon... I'm almost 100% certain that it is for the 25th Anniversary of Victory badge, but I've never seen another group like it, and I don't believe it was regulation to be worn as this.

Rather interesting! Has anyone else seen the 25th Anniversary badge worn as a ribbon before?

I believe that I, too, have seen many of these ribbon bars over the years. I just chalked it up to one of two possibilities: a) the owner was a civilian who was a bit sloppy about his order of precedence (placing his Order of Glory at the tail end of the group, or b) bars put together by someone ignorant of the proper order and meaning of the ribbons, who was simply trying to make a buck from his pile of odds and ends. It NEVER entered my mind that it could be for a BADGE!!! It would explain many things.:D

Earliest 5-sided Suspension devices???

Hello, gentlemen.
With my newly aquired collection of badges and orders I find very few that have the same suspension devices. Some are steel/brass, while others are steel/steel combination. Some are one-piece brass. And there are a couple of aluminum suspensions. I realize the aluminum is a dead giveaway to a more recent variation or medal altogether. But I was curious if anyone really knew which is the earliest design? Were there different manufacturing plants that produced different styles? My speculation would be that the steel/steel combination would be the earliest, hence the metal itself was less expense??? Can anyone shed some light on this subject?

:) Robert

Robert:

The earliest hangers are from the time period of the Tsar. They were brass. I've seen steel holders used on medals from the 1943 time period, and those were normally two-piece steel. I've also seen two-piece brass (normally steel and brass) mounts from the same time period. I've also seen solid brass mounts, as well as solid steel mounts... Both are from the 40's and 50's.

Later pieces were both brass and aluminum, with aluminum being almost exclusively used from the 1970's onwards.

It's hard to pin down an exact period of hangers, but that's a (very) rough estimate...

Unknown ribbons: Help on identification please

I took these ribbon bars from Marshal Koldunov´s ones from a very good web site. The owner could not identify them, and I would like to ask you for help, telling me the name of the award and if possible a picture of it.
Thanks!

Esteban

Number 2 is very similar to the ribbon of the East german award "Banner der Arbeit" (Banner of Labor). However, the official ribbon for that one is plain red and also have the class (I, II or III) attached.

The number 9 ribbon looks like the East German medal for long army service, see the attached image. Also on this one is usually the rank of the medal attached, like XX or X.
