The S/N range for PW 2nd Class is: 985701 - 6715100.

Opinions please on this one? I believe it is a Type 3 2nd class 1985 issue but the underlined serial number isn't in MacDaniels book. Thanks

dannybou,

I'm thinking about picking up this piece as well. It's a T3 (1985) 1st class.

Dannybou,

As Rusty indicated there is nothing wrong with the order. If you look on page 138 of McDaniels book you will see the underline.

Thanks

Order of the Great Patriotic war

A friend I meet here in Munich said he had a few soviet awards and said he'd bring in his Hero star. Being somewhat sceptical I said ok, I'd quite like to see it, as I've never actually seen one to date. Anyway he brought in a OGPW 2nd class, and after some discussion it seems he bought this some time ago in Moscow for $20 or so.

I couldn't, however, tell him, if it was the WW2 issue of the 1985 issue of this award. All of my reference books are back out in the UK, as I'm in the process of moving to Germany for work, so I can't just look it up in the PMD book as I'd normally do. So here's my question. How do you tell the 1985 re-issued version from the original WW2 version? Thanks.

Kind Regards,
Shane Cook.

Shane,

The simplest is that on pre-1985 OPW, the hammer and sickle come as a separate piece that is secured to the rest of the order by 2 small rivets that appear on the back, next to the screwpost. The 1985 Type 3 was struck as one piece, the hammer and sickle being struck as part of the order; also, the reverse is usually lightly pebbled, the mintmark is raised and the serial number is inscribed using a rotating tool.

Shane,

One small detail Marc forgot to tell that may also help is that the Mint Mark is at the top, at 12 o'clock, in two lines, and I believe the letters are bigger than the other Types and Variations. Also I believe that the S/N, at 6 o'clock, is always underlined.

Also according to MCD's book the serial numbers for a type 3 1985 issue range from 1,062,945 to 6,473,737.

Dannybou,

I think that the visual characteristics are easier to remember than the exact serial number range.

Shane,

Why not use Art's main site ?
All types are described (at least shortly), and it can really helps for such "easy" questions... ;)

Cheers.
