Medal snub for Russian cosmonaut sparks 'cosmic scandal'

Medal snub for Russian cosmonaut sparks 'cosmic scandal'

Cosmonaut Maxim Surayev, who returned to Earth in March after six months aboard the International Space Station (ISS), has twice been denied the Hero of Russia medal, in what the media has called a "scandal of cosmic proportions."

"The defence ministry has twice refused to award the Hero of Russia medal to Surayev," Roskosmos spokesman Alexander Vorobyov told AFP. "As far as I know there was no reason given."

The accolade -- one of the country's highest honours -- has been granted to nearly every first-time cosmonaut since pioneer spaceman Yuri Gagarin in 1961 and to every Russian to fly on the Soyuz craft since the breakup of the Soviet Union.

"The entire Russian cosmonaut community is up in arms at what is happening and in the end they may all go on strike," Vorobyov said, adding that the space agency had appealed to President Dmitry Medvedev to intervene.

The Hero of Russia medal confers housing, pension and travel benefits, as well as a state funeral.

Re: Medal snub for Russian cosmonaut sparks 'cosmic scandal'

I'm not particularly sure how I feel on this. I guess I lean more toward him getting the medal. It doesn't really matter how advanced we get, if one little thing fails on that spaceship or space station he could die. So, no matter what there is a risk involved. I do agree that they have to draw a line somewhere now that space flight is becoming more and more usual but I don't believe we have crossed that line yet. In a couple years, who knows?

Very respectfully,

Michael

Seems like the article suggests this cosmonaut has been passed over for his Gold Star because he keeps a blog and may not be the government's biggest friend. It wouldn't surprise me they would pas him over for that..

I am also ambivalent about all cosmonauts getting the distinction. Space flight has definitely gotten safer etc. But then, they gave the Gold Star to Ramzan Kadyrov..so could be worse lol.

I think this is another case showing how people would rather focus on the negative than the positive.

Hero Of The Russian Federation Maksim Viktorovich Suraev 30th December 2010.
