Is it the type of embroidery that distingishes it as a marshal's cap?

Yes, the embroidery is M1943 embroidery used by full Marshals of the USSR (branch marshals wore regular generals caps). If the cap is green/blue, like here, its an M1945. If its grey, its an M1943. M1940 caps had no embroidery.

There are a few threads in the cloth section were i have posted examples of each I have had in; check them out.
