Short, concrete description of his feat of arms or merits:

Division command assigned comrade Shchekotov to the 1169th Rifle Regiment to invigorate the staff and its staff duties. At critical moments comrade Shchekotov can be found at one of the battalions or companies, where he capably provides practical assistance to the unit commanders during combat operations.

When the division was redeployed to the southern bank of the Kuban River, as per the Army’s orders, comrade Shchekotov personally assumed command of a company of soldiers in order to support the crossing of the troops and repel the enemy. He opposed superior enemy forces, but held the road between the stations of Starokorsunskaya and Pashkovskaya. During this operation he counterattacked the enemy and killed up to a platoon of fascists.

On August 22, 1942, during the fighting with the enemy near Goryachy Klyuch [“Hot Key”], the staff of the 1169th Rifle Regiment was surrounded by the enemy. The regimental commander, Major Ivanov, was severely wounded. Comrade Shchekotov organized a group of staff commanders, took command of them, and escaped from the encirclement. The badly wounded regimental commander was evacuated by comrade Shchekotov himself. As he was leaving the encirclement, comrade Shchekotov slaughtered three German sentries with his knife.

Upon returning to his unit on August 23, 1942, he assumed command of the regiment. In the course of one day he restored the regiment’s positions and launched an offensive. The regiment then took height 349.5, killed 70 fascist soldiers and officers, and captured several trophies.

For his feats of arms comrade Shchekotov deserves to be awarded the Order of Lenin.
