Ljudmirskij wasn't always a "farmer". The 1924 Kiev born Ljudmirskij joined the Red Army in the Uzbek SSR in 1942 and trained as a sniper - positioned in the 27th Separate Flamethrower Battalion of the 202nd Rifle Division.

In 1944 he was awarded a Glory III with the tag line "With his sniper rifle Ljudmirskij personally destroyed 15 enemy soldiers".
