Instituted on 14 September 1945, this order was awarded for services in connection with the 9 September 1944 uprising and the formation of the People's Republic, to civilians for outstanding services in the establishment of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, and in wartime for bravery courage and leadership in action by officers and leaders of the People's Army.

Two divisions were created, a Military and a Civil Division, each having three classes.

The Military Division can be recognized by its insignia having crossed swords.

Two types of the order exist : a screw-back type and a ribboned one. The central medallion depicts a Bulgarian patriot, Vasil Levski.

Ribbon: Red, with green and white stripes or edges according to grade.

Here the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class ribbons.

The designer of these Orders was artist B. Angelushev, originally the awards were made in a private studio in Sofia, and later in the Bulgarian State mint.

The first person to be awarded the 1st Class with swords was G.Dimitrov.
The earlier award has the initials VL (вл)to the left and right of the face in the central medallion these stand for Vasil Levski who is pictured on the Order. He was a Bulgarian revolutionary, national hero, ideologist, strategist and theoretician of the Bulgarian national revolution. He was leader of the struggle for liberation.
Born on 18 July 1837 in Karlovo. Brought to the gallows on 18 February 1873 in the outskirts of Sofia.

Eddie.

Order of "9 September 1944", 1st Class last emission, 2nd type with small ribbons and the big plastic case.
This Order was awarded to Vladimir Kostov (as written on the case). He received the award in March, 1987.

Different busts

I just took a good look at my 9 Sept. orders, and noticed two designs for the bust on the front of these orders. You can see both versions in pictures already in this thread so I won't post pics myself. In the one, the bust "floats" in the middle of the medallion, while the second version shows more of the shoulders and they reach the bottom of the medallion.

Any ideas as to significance?

Matt.

Hey Taz, did you use to own this particular Order? The reason I am asking is I now am the proud owner of it!! :) Just received it this morning from a dealer in Canada. One question I have, other than the obvious enamel, what is the metal used for the Order? Thanks
