Just as an info for the aviation collectors:
In KAVALIER vol. 10 are good colour pictures of 26 different air force veteran's badges and if I have understand right, most of them are very rare. Jussi-Pekka |

Flying Acadamy Graduation Badges
Here are a couple of Flying Academy graduation Badges. Maybe it's the dodgy pics but they look fairly crudly made unlike Rudys examples.
Prehaps Fakes? Eddie.

I have an interest in Tsarist aviation items. Unfortunately, and obviously, those kinds of things are hard to come by.
This past week I did find two nice items. One is the silver and gold wings of a pilot-observer and the second, and much more modest, is a postcard with a painting of a little boy in a child's pilot's uniform, standing in front of a very early monoplane, with the caption "Glory to our Young Pilots", or something like that. My Russian is poor, indeed. As before, I do not have access to a color scanner, so I can't share them with you. That will have to wait until I get home in August. Among my Soviet aviation items back home, I have a Normandy Squadron veteran's badge. I also have stamps, envelopes and (I think) postcards commemorating that squadron. I also have a Narkomat of Aviation Otlichnik badge and one or two other items and several Aeroflot badges. I'll be glad to share in August. Just remind me. Taz, you made me laugh.
Today a friend brought me some interesting gifts. He knows of my interest in Tsarist aviation (could there be a more arcane area?) and he brought me issues #26, 27 and 30 of a Tsar-period magazine that was more-or-less continually published through the Soviet period. Anyway, each of these well-illustrated magazines has one or more articles about Tsarist aviation, including pictures. They will make great additions to my collection. He also gave me another interesting item. It is an old candy box about 1.5 times the size of a pack of cigarettes. Its top is illustrated. At the bottom are three early tanks. At the top are three four-engine bombers. In the middle 3/4 of the box top is a picture of a horse-mounted Soviet guard somewhere in the forests, wearing a Budonnovka (sp?), saluting a CCCR border marker. So, I guess it must be mid-'30s. The guy who gave it to me is my buddy the Kurd MVD colonel and he is a student of Soviet military history. He gave me this explanation of this box. It was common for a commander to give a small gift of appreciation to any guard who did an especially difficult or out-of-the-ordinary job at his guard post. One of the most popular pre-war gifts was this box of candy, commissioned especially for this purpose. It is a very interesting gift and it, too, will be displayed with my collection. Maybe with my border guard items. As for why on earth someone would have kept his box all these years, who can possibly say? Pictures in August, I promise.
