No, unfortunately... I did not see one . I just found recent DVDs on Moscow and St Petersburg (not seen yet...).

Admiralty

Another view of the Admiralty - the HQ of the Russian Navy from 1711 to 1917 -, with a different light.

naval museum

ch.

did you make it to the naval museum? I was in Tallinn, just a few hours away by car, while you were in St.Pete. Tallinn is nice, small, but well preserved.

Hi Doug,

It was on my plan. I wanted to save time enough to do it on my last day in St Petersburg... and, unfortunately - as things sometimes happen - I have not got the opportunity to do it... Bad timing for this time. I will do better next time !!!

Doug, thanks again for all your hints. Did you see or find interesting things in Tallinn ?

Cheers.

Ch.

Tallinn

Hi Ch.

well, next time you will make it to the Naval museum (what about the artillery musuem?)...Tallinn is a really nice, old, city. They have wiped out any Russian traces though. The women are the most amazing I have ever seen, bar none ( I have been in 33 countries, 44 US states)...they all looked like Anna Kournikova.

I would not agree 100%, while the Old town is cleaned up and nice, just a minute outside of the centre, maybe less, the Soviet-era Tallin (Tallin, yes) can be seen all over. It has its charm too...

I agree, however the ones we have in Finland are not that bad either.

Tallinn

True, we did go for lunch at a very soviet era bar / club in the russian section of Tallinn...however, what i was writing about was the traditional tourist Tallinn. The russian section looks alot like the apartment blocks outside of moscow; but in regular Tallinn they are erasing all they can of the soviet-russian occupation ( the occupation museum being a great stop; it makes the russians seem worse then the germans).

i was amazed by how the Finns seem to be all over. They come over by ferry and go home the same day. Our city tour was in english and finnish. I did not meet any other americans, just a few brits who seemed to be happy to be drinking, no matter where they were.

is Riga worth a visit? Vilnius?

Riga is a really nice place, but very little Soviet militaria. I'd say, that Riga is more de-Sovietified than Tallinn. I was there in March last time with a russian friend from Estonia (we went there for the militaria fair) and I was surprised to find that there were almost no Soviet things for sale in the old town nor at the general marketplace. I had to go to the junk-market where some small stuff was found. I have not been to Vilnius, but reports indicate that the availability of interesting stuff is low.
