Azatyan was Armenian, born in 1908 in Kirovakan. It was not a party member and had a primary education. He served in the Red Army from 1930 to 1931 and from 1942 to 1946 during the time of placing in the Nevsky was in the 14th Regiment of Fusiliers guard of the 6th Airborne Division, framed in the 7th Army Guard.
