Militia General's Parade Uniform.
Available on an auction site, link can be provided by PM. Something to spend the paycheck of this week on? It looks quite good.., but lacks the Lenin order?

Unless there's an order book/award documents or research for the orders and medals, all you have is a dress uniform with a bunch of added medals, in other words, something to put on a mannequine but lacking in historical value.
My opinion. :) --Dave |

Not really MVD...
The uniform is tech. MVD, but its actually a Militia / Police generals parade uniform. They were under the MVD, but were a seperate branch. A real MVD generals uniform would look just like army, but with a brick red piping and cap band.
Most of these are put together sets; medals added. Dave is right, without papers, then its just a display set. DougD |

New to collecting - quick questions
If one was to buy such a uniform, without documents, what would one pay? I have several uniforms that don't have any medals, but I did just recently win one off of our auction site...The ranks are mostly Majors and Captains, and they're all in great condition. How much would those be worth?
I know of the factories in the Ukraine producing Soviet militaria, and if one was to buy a reproduction, how much would one pay? I thank anyone who helps answer these questions. Michael |

"Such a uniform" is too general. Each uniform has its own price.
However, if you are looking for cheap uniforms then modern Soviet officers and generals are the way to go; most modern officers are under $100, even generals can be had for under $200. This contrasts to WWII era when prices can go as high as $10k or even $18k. DD |

Well, I don't have the cash for WW2 uniforms, and I think I'll build my collection of modern uniforms first. I only have m89 style uniforms, and I've been paying about 40 USD for them. They're Majors and Captains, as I said. Is there a differential in price for parade uniforms and service uniforms? I do really have to find a price guide. Does anyone recommend one?

price guide
there really is no published price guide. For modern uniforms, as much as I hate to admit it, E-bay probably is the best place to look. See what the prices are there ( avoid uniforms with medals as the prices become realy high without reason). Its not a perfect gauge, but for modern stuff its not bad. Many dealers, like myself, don't even deal with modern anymore since the market has become so flooded. But e-bay is a good source for this type of thing.
Also, keep coming here. This site is about the best place to ask questions. DD |

Doug is right. At present Ebay is about the best place for M1969 and M1989 uniforms. Even some 1960s uniforms turn up from time to time which go for reasonable prices. But beware of the put together sets, fakes and just plain innacurate uniforms. I have seen loads on there...as Doug says this is the best place to get an opinion on a uniform.
As for price guides, in general officers service uniforms are generally cheaper than parade uniforms but from time to time there are exceptions to this rule. Expect to pay over $100 for complete generals parade and service uniforms as these are usually sold by militaria dealers. Individual pieces such as caps, tunics etc will vary too but can quite easily be picked up.

Some quick thoughts.
First there is really no M89 familly of uniforms. The M89 regs are just a minor modification of the M69 class, which underwent several other modifications. The exception are a few, mostly field items introduced in 1989. So use the term M69 for better understanding. Doug is right that Ebay is the best resource for uniforms. If you find one at a local militaria store or show it will usually cost a lot more. Just do a few things. 1) Shop around and wait. You can pay $150 to $450 for a standard late 80s army major-general service uniform on ebay. The $150 may take months to find, you should see a $250 every few weeks. 2) Always search a seller's other auctions. If they sell lots of made up and questionable stuff find someone better. Since LOTS of stuff is available think carefully about what you want. Doug is not being fair when he says that WWII uniforms can be $10K to 18K. That is true and I have seen the fantastic uniforms he is speaking of. However, what he left out is that you can also get genuine WWII or immediate post-WWII (i.e. M43 class) general's service uniforms for much, much less. So, don't just decide you can't afford WWII. You can get some M43 service tunics for under $500 and hats for under $200. Sometimes full sets for under $500. You can also get post-war but still 1950s and 60s uniforms for similar prices. Feel free to PM Doug or I if you want to know where. In my opinion, better to get (for the same cost of say $500) one pre-1969 generals uniform (say M43 or M54/55) than two much more questionable, more common and less likely to gain in value M69 era uniforms. Just to put it in perspective, I recently bought the M43 service uniform of Marshal of the Signal Forces Peresypkin. He was head of Red Army signals through the war, plus minister of communications, plus deputy minister of defence. He was the only signals marshal to use the M43 uniform so it is literally a one of a kind uniform. I paid LESS for it then for what the questionable M69 marshals uniforms are sold for on Ebay. When people realize that many M69 uniforms are modern copies and that earlier uniforms are avialable for little more then the price of these earlier ones will shoot up. In my opinion get in on them before the rush! Shawn |

Thank you all for your responses. Also, is there a direct way to tell the difference between a pre-fall uniform and a post-Soviet uniform made in the Ukraine? I've checked Randall Stewart's information for caps, but haven't found much regarding uniforms fakes. I know I have much to learn, and am willing to read each of your opinions, and form my own from your input. Feel free to PM me if you know of some things that an early collector should use as tools, or items that you believe an early collector must have.
