Colonel Kazimierz Sidor, Partisan Leader/Diplomat

HEre are just a few documents from the private archive of colonel Kazimierz Sidor - most of them refer to his 1945 mission to Italy where he was responsible for organising repatriation of the former soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces in the West to Poland.

Most of the documents won't even require translation, as they are in English.
Later on, I will post a bit of an inforamtion on Sidor himself, and a lot of sources on his partisan activity.

First we have a letter for the participants of the military mission to present o any Brittish authorities whose help may be required by the mission.
It was issued by the Brittish Embessay in Warsaw. the city of Teschen listed is most likely Cieszyn/Te's'in on the Polo-czech border.
Sidor listed in the first place.

Letter (dated October 1945) from the Polish Embassey in Rome asking all civil and military authiorities to provide neccessary help to the personnel of the mission.

Multi-lingual document certifying powers grantd to Sidor on his work in Italy.

Re: col. Kazimierz Sidor, partisan leader & diplomat

Also from his personnal archive:
A 1-day newspaper "We are returning to Poland" by the Cultural-educational committe of the Polish repatriation camps in Cervinara, 1945
A news- and propaganda-print adressed to the former soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces in the West in Italy to encaurage them to return to Poland.

The officer in the center of the cover (in the square "rogatywka" visor cap) is Kazimierz Sidor

Also, on one of the pages, by the article describing his arrival to the camp his official photograph is also seen.

Re: col. Kazimierz Sidor, partisan leader & diplomat

Enlarged photograph

According to wikipedia:
Kazimierz Sidor – Wikipedia, wolna encyklopedia
Used pseudonyms "Kazik" (short from Kazimierz), "Hardy" (Hard, bold), "Kruk" (Raven), Swarożyc (Ancient slavic god).
There seems to be the problem with localising his birthplace - either the name has changed or the village was incorporated by alarger settllement or it was destroyed during the war or in the early post-war years by any of the sides.

Before the war he was a member of a slightly-leftist rural youth organisation "Siew".
Since 1939 in conspiracy, he was a co-founder of the "Young Peasant Union", later re-formed into the People's Fighting Organisation (he was it's commander in Lublin Voivodeship from 1940 to 1942). He also was one of the organisers of the BCh (Peasant Battalions - 2nd largest Partisan organisation in nazi-occupied Poland).
In 1942, when his People's Fighting Organisation was incorporated into the GL (People's Guards, later People's Army - 3rd larest partisan organisation, pro-soviet one) he became a commander of the Lublin district of the GL. He was a member of the conspiracy local pro-soviet government and editpor of 2 underground newspapers.
He took part in the KRN's delegation to Moscow in 1944, later was a member of the KRN (a sort of collective presidency/parliament in the first post-war years).

His misssion in Rome lasted from 1945 to 1947, than untill 1949 he became a military attache of the polish embassey in Berlin. From 1950 to 1956 he was a vice-director of the International Affairs Institute in Warsaw.
1956-60 he was an ambassador in Iran and Afghanistan, from 1960 to 1965 in Egipt with simultaneous acreditation in Yemen, Libia and Somalia. From 1972 to 1977 Ambassador in Italy and Malta, 1978-180 Ambassador in Turkey.

Died in 1981 in Warsaw.

Author of: "In the imprisonment by Anders", "The third front", "Gods, Magi and Oil", "Revolution under the Pyramids", "Naserism - history, practice and theory of socialism in the United Arab Republic [Egipt]", "Hill of Vaticanus" and other publications.

Awarded Grunwald Cross 3rd class (as one of the first) and 2nd Class, Virtuti Militari Silver Cross, Order of the Banner of Labour 1st class, Polonia Restituta Commander's Cross with a Star, Partisan Cross and others.

Re: Colonel Kazimierz Sidor, Partisan Leader/Diplomat

A bit on his partisan activity from the "Communiques of the Main Command of the GL and AL" (published as a book in 1959):

Communique of the HQ of the GL, 1st Januarz 1943:
"(...)
9-10th of November 1942 in Tyśmienica partisan squad destroyed the local government office including documents and machines. On return, the squad fought with german gendarmerie. Exact casulties of the enemy unknown, there were wounded. The squad had no casulties."

From the comment: "The action was executed by the GL squad lead by "Kazik" (Kazimierz Sidor)."
First map shows the location of Tyśmienica near Kock

Communique of the HQ of the GL, 20st Januarz 1943:
"(...)6,7,8 of December [1942] a partisan groupof 45 people fought in Parczew Forests with a German battallion. The germans with manpower of 1000 men had 4 cannons and a tank. The partisans' whereabouts were compromised by alocal person. The group knew about it and was awaiting the attack. The germans attacked simultaneously from 3 directions. [... there follow the description of the battle in which the partisants lead by "Fiodor" - Red Army POW sr. lt. Fyodor Albrekht/Teodor Albrecht - after 3days, caused the Germans to retreat(!) losing one dead and causing the casulties of 13dead, 10 wounded...]
The same squad after a few days attacked the town of Ostrów Lubelski. All the authorities and offices were disbanded, a policeman and community's secretary were shot. Police Chief was heavily wounded. The squad didn'tsuffer any loses(...)"

Comment:
"It was a revange action for pacyfing by the hitlerites the village of Białki (powiat of Włodawa). The plan of the action was prepeared by Zygmunt Gołąwski, Kazimierz Sidor, "Fiodor" (Teodor Albrecht) and Józef Balcerzak.
The action was executed by the 80-people squad lead by "Fiodor" and Józef Balcerzak"
2nd map shows the location of Ostrów Lubelski (town with over 2000 inhabitants). Lubartów is shown for better identification (that town is easier to find).

Communique of the HQ of the GL, 20th May 1943:
"(...)Fight with obligatory quotas

Partisan groups destroyed the following diary plants working for the ocupants:
(...)Jedlanka(...)"

Comment:
the action was executed on 17th April 1943 by the raiding group of GL lead by "Kazik" (Kazimierz Sidor)"
Last map shows Jedlanka (village, about 700 people, no trace of any milk-product plant in the area these days.

Re: Colonel Kazimierz Sidor, Partisan Leader/Diplomat

Communique of the HQ of the GL, 30th July 1943:
"(...)on 10th April the squad named after Adam Mickiewicz captured a police post fortified with barbed wire and reinforced concrete bunkers as well as the local government office in Ludwin. Action was executed during day, 2 of the dark blues [policemen] were killed, 8 were disarmed. After the action, on a rally, the people welcommed the Guards with applause. Ludwin wasused as penitentiary center for the local villages. As a reinforcements for the post, a strong automobile column arrived from Lublin. In the fight with oursquad, the Germans have lost 4 dead, 1 wounded and hastly retreated. The squad lost 1 Guard.(...)"

Comment:
"The action was lead by "Kirpiczny" (Jan Hołod), member of the nLublin District HQ. Among its participants were "Kruk", "Kazik" (Kazimierz Sidor), commander of the Lublin District of the GL, Stefan Kowalewski, member of the AK, who cooperated with the GL in Włodawa Powiat since 1942. In the battle, a Guard "Wiktor" was killed (surname was not identified)."
First map Shows Ludwin and it's distance from Lublin.

Communique of the HQ of the GL for the period of 15th July to 25th August 1943:
"(...) Partisan squad named after Ludwik Waryński derailed a military train in Tulnicki Forest on the Gródek-Parczew line, 35 train cars was derailed, of which 17 have fallen from the earthwork, over 80 military vehicles were destroyed."

Comment:
"The action was executed by removing the screws holding the rails. It was in thesecond half of July 1943. It was led by "Kazik" (Kazimierz Sidor) and Kazimierz Tkaczyk. According tothe German gendarmerie report of 18th July 1943 a transport-cargo military train nr.333017 was derailed. 18 cars and engine were derailed, 800 meters of rail was destroyed."
We may assume that the partisans overestimated the german loses in the effect of this action.
I was unable to locate the railway - there's Gródek further north, but no railway linking it with Parczew. Possibly it's different Gródek - most likely Horodok in Rivne Oblast', Ukraine, as it'sthe closest one. Again, no luck locating the railway - possibly removed after the war.

Communique of the HQ of the GL for the period of 15th to 25th September 1943:
"(...)In a 20-minute fight with gendarmerie on the road Parczew-Ostrów the a partisan squad killed 7 gendarmes, one ran away. Long weapons, personnal weapons and granades were captured.(...)"
Comment:
"The partisan squad lead by "Kazik" (Kazimierz Sidor) ambushed on 27th August a German gendarmerie squad between Tyśmienica and Babianka. Within the participants of the action there were: "Kolka" (Mikołaj Meluch), "Drabik" - "MAdej" (Bolesłąw Drabik), "Edek" (Edward Szczęsny), "Bolek" (Gustaw Alef-Bolkowiak), "Stach" (Stanisław Gajuś), "Czesiek" (Czesław Gajuś), "Murzyn" (Ryszard Postowicz), "Janek" (Jan Litko). As it turned out from the documents found with the killed gendarmes, they arrived on 25th August 1943 from Denmark to Poland. Apart from the guns and ammunition, 4 telephones and one field telephone central were captured."
The second map shows the road with it's piece between Tyśmienica and Babianka marked by Yellow Rectangle.

Communique of the HQ of the GL for the period of 5th to 15th November 1943:
"(...)A partisan squad demolished during one night 3 trains on the Gródek-Parczew railroad: one with troops, one with food cargo and one with ammunition cargo, which caused great loses in enemy manpower and material.(...)"
Comment:
"(...) The action of destroyng the military train was executed by a squad lead by "Kazik" (Kazimierz Sidor) that consisted of: Kazimierz Tkaczyk, Stanisław Gajuś, Czesław Gajuś, Bolesław Drabik, Czesłąw Banachowicz, Czesław Duklewski, Józef Szumanek and others. The whole transport was destroyed, five soldiers and a machinst - German were killed.(...)"

Re: Colonel Kazimierz Sidor, Partisan Leader/Diplomat

Communique nr 2 of the Supreme Command of the People's Army of 15th April 1944:
"(...)A partisan squad srronded the village o Jamy, in which a pacification squad consisting of Kalmuks [soldiers of the Ostlegionen] ws tmporarily stationed. After breaking the first rsistance, the villag was captured. As the effect of the fight, 8 Kalmuks were killed, 10 were taken prisoner, later shot. handguns and machineguns were cptured.(...)"
Comment:
"After reconnaissance by "Kolka" (Mikołaj Meluch)and "Maciek" (JAn Wojtowicz) an AL squad lead by "Franek" (Fraciszek Woliński)during the night of 7th/8th March 1944 surprised Germans [?] stationned inthe village, who had been responsible foobbing nd aping the inhabitants. As the effect of the fight, the AL partians captured, apart from weapons and ammunition, plans with attack directions on partisan squads marked, passwords to be used in case 2 German units meet at night, list of village inhabitants, covering a a few-hundeed-people list of those, who were to be shot. Captured Germans testified, that their squad was a scouting vanguard of larger units, which have indeed arrived to the rai station in Parczew, Gródek and Brzeźnica that night with an order to pacify Włodwa region, especially Parczew Forests. One partisan was kiled in the battle - young Wacek of Uhnin. Among the participants of the action there were the commandant of the region II - "Mietek" (Mieczysław Moczar) and commandant o the IV (Lublin) District - "Kazik", "Kruk" (Kazimerz Sidor).
The map shows he position of he village - it is on the same road where the ambush of 27th August 1943 took place.
The village has been awarded Grunwald Cross for the fact tha many o its inhabitants were engaged in the partisan movement. There's a chapel and a monuent (shown from google streetview) commemorating the pacification of the village by nazis day after the partisan action - the village was burnt down to the ground and 152 inhabitants were murdered.
