Thanks for the post!
That was a very interesting story! I guess you'll know you've got good friends when they make sure to bury you at the top of the pile!! - Sean

Wow - can you imagine if he had been buried at the bottom of the pile? Now THAT'S something you can lose sleep over!
Thanks for sharing that fascinating story! I once met a vet on the Moscow metro. He was a communications NCO who had been hit in the head with shrapnel during the fighting against the Finns in 1940. He too had been buried and had to dig his way out. Because of his head wound, he was discharged from the military and worked as an engineer in Moscow during the Patriotic War. Just makes you wonder how many other folks were in the same situation... Dave |

Re: Dead and buried war veteran claims medal 60 years on
Here is the original record of Sergeant Georgij Fedorovich Ponomarev's death. Showing him dying on Hill 129.2 near Sofievka on 28th December 1943 whilst serving in the 177th Rifle Regiment, 236th Rifle Division.
Unfortunately there seems to be a little bit of journalistic spin put on this article as he was awarded an OPWII'85 - These Jubilee awards were not posthumous. No doubt authorities will have known of his survival when he was liberated from the Nazis.
