Would these high-rank shoulderboards have a factory stamp on the back? I would imagine that they would have been made on order, like the general's uniforms (they supplied the generals with the cloth material, which they took to the military tailor shop, right?), rather than kept in stock.

You are absolutely right. All rank apaulets up to colonel could be bought in military stores called "Voentorg". Generals and Admirals epaulets were supplied on orders

Eugene is right that they were not available in the Voentorgs. But I doubt they were made on demand. It would not make economic sense. I am sure they were made in larger runs and just issued on demand.

Unfortunately many original ones, even going back to WWII, do not have any stamps on the back of them.
