Hello
I just picked this little grouping up in South Africa. It is very difficult to find soviet items in South Africa because we are so far away BUT some of the member of the new government were trained in Soviet / eastern block countries so you do get the odd item (more labour related) popping up. This "arrived". I know its east german but exactly what is it and also I note the Soviet badge with a ship. All came together from the same guy. Can anyone help identify what they all are. Kind regards Munroe Last edited by CtahhR; 02-02-2012 at 05:19 AM. |

The order in the box is the Banner of Labor, equivalent to the Soviet Red Banner of Labor. It was awarded in three classes. I think, the one in the picture is a First Class. The flag is red enamel and for the 1989 issue red epoxy.
"Jungaktivist" is an award for young persons excelling on the job. The round badge with the GDR state seal is probably a hat badge worn with some kind of uniform.

Dear Dietrich
Thank you very much. There are 3 little stripes in the top suspension bar. Does this mean its a 3rd class? Kind regards Munroe |

Dear Munroe,
It's a commemorative pin. It says "Glory to the Soviet Navy!" Alexei |

Thanks everyone for helping.
Now I know what everything is. The only pity is that this belonged to someone (the labour medal is unnamed and unnamed) and I don't who it was. The dealer who sold it to me bought it from the guy and did not bother to ask for any documents. He did not even bother to get the sellers name etc. It would have been extremely interesting becuase it would have been a some ANC guy trained in East Germany. The Jungaktivist award and the labour award together make sense and I assume the pine was picked up somewhere else. Once again quite a pity becuase it would have made a great story. The ANC and PAC in South Africa had many of its members trained in the old eastern block but one never sees medals to these guys coming onto the market. This happened in Mozambique, Angola and Zimbabwe as well. Kind regards Munroe |

Dear Munroe,
since these awards were for sale, they are apparently not worn any longer, at least by this seller. But I wonder whether any of the East Block awards are still worn in some developing country. How about South Africa? Who is ANC and PAC and what is their importance today?

The ANC is the African National Congress and they are the ruling party. The PAC is the Pan Africa Congress, they are an extemly militant outfit.
Other than the WW2 commerative medals I have not seen any of the ruling part nor anyone in the military wear their Eastern block awards. They definately must have received some. I will ask around a bit. The guy who sold his awards did not seem to care about them much. Pity.. Kind regards Munroe |

Re: East German Group To South African.
Hello Munroe - I know this thread is a few years old, however if you still have the Banner of Labor medal, I would be interested in a photo of the back of the medal. The clasp of the medal may at least give a determination of when the medal was awarded. Thanks.
