Christophe,
The handwriting says: "Army General N. Shelokov". These words don't replace the stamp. William Last edited by new world; 05-23-2003 at 12:33 PM. |

The document is named to Major-General Ernst Marterer. (Maybe DDR?)
It is signed Minister of the Interior (MVD) Army General N. Shchelokov. It is worrying that there is no stamp. It is interesting though that the document is printed with "Minister of the Interior", it is not simply written in. This is very unusual. Shawn |

Thanks for your input and comments. Difficult to know what to think about this absence of stamp...
Army General Nikolai A. Shchelokov was effectively USSR's Ministry of Interior (MVD). In 1966, as one of Brezhnev's protégés, Nikolai A. Shchelokov, has been placed in the post of chief of the MOOP (Ministry for the Preservation of Public Order). Two years later, MOOP was renamed the MVD, an apparent symbol of its increased authority. Brezhnev's death, however, left the MVD vulnerable to his opponents, Andropov in particular. Just a month after Brezhnev died, Shchelokov was ousted as its chief and replaced by the former MVD chairman, Vitalii Fedorchuk. Shchelokov was later tried on corruption charges, and later "committed suicide." That's all I found on him... if you have more... Another ex of his signature (seems correct in all points). Mystery still total... Ch. Last edited by CtahhR; 03-04-2012 at 09:44 PM. |

Re: Nikolai A. Shchelokov
Wasn't he related to Brezhnev?
It seem to me he was Brezhnev's son-in-law... I remember shortly after Brezhnev's death there was famous criminal case in SU when Schelokov was accused and convicted of some serios crimes. Best, William Quote:

Except if I'm wrong, Brezhnev's son-in-law was Iurii Churbanov, who has been First deputy Chief of the MVD. A similar fate as Shchelokov befell him after Brezhnev died; he was removed from his post in 1984 and later arrested on criminal charges (corruption).
Just to add that the Colonel General Yuri Churbanov, Brezhnev's son-in-law, was in 1988 sentenced to 15 years in prison for taking bribes. Yuri's wife Galina, Brezhnev's daughter, also had legal problems linked to this, and morover an affair with circus manager Boris the Gypsy. But that's another story !! Ch. Christophe,
You're right, that was Churbanov. Still, I think Shelokov was also involved in the story, the name sounds very familiar. William |

William,
That's correct : both of them have been involved in some (not all) same stories and trials. Ch. |
