Thanks Marc. I knew there were only two classes of the medal, but was just wondering aloud at why something named 1st class would be silver, a metal that is often linked with '2nd'. But I suppose the medals trail the 3 Orders of Motherhood, so it makes more sense.

Thanks again. :)

Motherhood medals

Hi,

I'm a bit confused with the two motherhood medals. McDaniel's Bible says that the gold-washed medal with light blue enamels is the 1st class, and the silver with dark blue enamels is the 2nd class. However, many sites claim the opposite! Which is true?

It would seem intuitively true that gold is 1st class and silver 2nd class.

Thanks,
Stahanov

Re: Motherhood medals

The opposite is true.
That's the only real error in the Red Book and the Authors are aware of it.

Medal "Maternity".

Hi guys,

Just a quick question for the pros. The Motherhood medal, though not the sexiest award that exists, seems to have some confusion around it..

Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals, as well as this site, say that the brass medal is 1 Class and silver is 2 Class. ("Gold" and "Silver")

However, Mondvor as well as wikipedia say it's the other way around--that Silver is 1 Class and brass is 2. Which is correct? :)

Thanks,
George

Re: Motherhood medal 1 or 2?

Correct. Silver=1 and brass=2. I know the authors of The Comprensive Guide were quite upset at that small error. This site (The Soviet Military Awards Page. Medals, History and Russia!) does however note silver as 1st class and brass as 2nd. Unless it was changed in the last two hours where did you see that mistake?

Re: Motherhood medal 1 or 2?

Thank you both. :thumbsup Eric, that's the strangest thing--I could've sworn it was here. It must've been on another site, I'm getting my wires crossed. Yup, good to know silver is 1st class which would make sense.

I seem to get my wires crossed on a fairly regular basis so no worries, mate. :thumbsup This is the place to get un-crossed in relative obscurity. ;)

It took me a couple of months to notice this thread, but it was much longer than that before I had figured out definitively which way round the medals went. But, as you well know, silver is first and brass second just as with the Partisan medals (only far less rare and expensive). I only add this now because I thought the comparison was a good one to make.
