Wooden Box for Screwback
Hi guys,
Wondering if anyone has seen a box like the one I bought recently. It looks like maybe the veteran himself made it for storing a screwback order. It's really well-made actually.. I am wondering if anyone (especially our friends in Russia) know the inspiration for the artwork on the box. Seems like it was a common design in the late 70s/early 80s, like this postcard below. Thanks for looking! George |

Re: Wooden Box for Screwback
I've never seen anything like that. Is the graphic hand-painted or is it screen printed? Did you buy it from the vet? Could have several explanations, the vet may have had it made for him, or it could have been produced later as a fantasy item to possibly boost value of the set. I guess it all depends on how far back you can trace the set to the original owner. The graphic is a common Soviet army veteran device. It is also popular on veterans badges (shield w/ ribbons) and veteran commemorative postcards, just about all commemorative printed matter.

Re: Wooden Box for Screwback
Thanks Art. It's handpainted, looks better in person. Unfortunately I bought it from someone who bought in on Arbat in the early 90s. It came with a 1985 GPW-II. Whatever it is, it's been a cool enhancement to the collection. I put different awards into it, right now it's this late RS. Thanks for the tip on artwork too, I perused my Badges/Znachki book by Paul, indeed many similarities.

Re: Wooden Box for Screwback
What a beautiful piece of artwork! It would look great on a desk with maybe a framed postcard or other Soviet kitsch.
I'm very envious.
