Re: Cleaning a Uniform

I'd avoid anything that goes physically ONTO the cloth. Has too much danger. I have doubts about stuff that goes even NEAR the cloth, but I use cedar blocks anyway to keep Hitlerite cloth-eating insects at bay.

Re: Cleaning a Uniform

Ok. I think I know what is best then.
I did take an em dress jacket without anything on it to the dry cleaners. I couldn't have left it the way it was. The liner was half gone. It also had horrible stains and was really dirty. Couldn't get much worse. Once it's back I'll show a picture of it.

Re: Cleaning a Uniform

Here it is. I am satisfied with the cleaning. One side of the front is discolored/stained as you can see. Hey, the button is still on it! :thumbsup This really is one of those "keep or throw away?" items.

Now you all can see how it looks under the liner. :D

Re: Cleaning a Uniform

I do not mean to be rude, but why did you bother cleaning and caring about a trash 1980s enlisted man tunic without insignia?
Those sets are still cheap, you can get a perfect condition one at the cost of a friday dinner out.

Re: Cleaning a Uniform

Would you want him to experiment on a Marshal's parade tunic instead? :)

Cleaning and working on a marshals uniform would at least make sense. I just do not see the good in working on a such bad condition, still cheap-to-buy-better uniform.

Re: Cleaning a Uniform

Well, I think because it has a special meaning for me. Of course I could get one like it in better condition for a low price. But how many people know from what unit and from where their enlisted dress uniform comes from?
I guess it was also a try to see how the cleaning would go.

Re: Cleaning a Uniform

A question that occurs to me on this topic from time to time is this: How did they used to clean these? I doubt someone wore his tunic everyday for years without washing. Does anyone know how the general (or his aide) cleaned that kitel in 1944? Beat it on a rock? Throw it away and get a new one made? Some white tunics I have show easily removed and replaced buttons to imply that, at least these, were subjected to rather harsh cleaning. Somebody's grandfather must remember, eh?
