Estaban,

Excuse me, but once again you are wrong! There is no pattern, and there is no such thing as a special ribbon!!! You are reading too much into a picture. No matter how much you wish it to be true it is not.

I'm sorry to be rude, but how hard do you need to be hit between the eyes with the truth.

Sorry for being blunt,
Ed M.

Esteban,

Look at this ribbon, it has a very distinct pattern, but it's not made of wood :)

I don't have a photo of it, but an active-duty Russian Lt Colonel I met at a conference in 1999 actually wore two sets of ribbons... He had his Russian set (four awards) on top, sewn on, and then a 1/4 inch space, and then his Soviet awards (seven awards). It was quite interesting...

Howdy all-

Trying to decipher Marshal Koldunov's ribbon bar. I've gotten the Soviet ones down pat, as well as the Bulgarian and Hungarian awards, but there are just a few that are really causing me a lot of pain! I know some of them are Mongolian, but I've yet to find a good site with Mongolian ribbons. Please PM me and I'll forward you a link for a larger scan of the group. I appreciate your help!

well i see some DDR ribbons:
13rd row: two medals (1st and 2nd class) for strenghtening friendship, maybe medal for service to the motherland, czekoslovakia; , maybe medal for good service, DDR, medals of friendship 1st and 2nd class DDR; two hungarian orders, 2 rumanian (courage medal and 30 years of liberation of fascism), maybe polish orders, mlaybe the last two cuba.

here's comrade Koldunov:

Hi Dave, thanks for the scan, it is excellent. You found ribbons I didn’t knew.
Now it’s my turn to try...

7th row: the white one with central red ray is maybe the order for military valor of mongolia; the last one on the right is a romanian order of tudor vladimirescu 4th class (I got the 5th class with a ribbon similar).

8th far right: it’s not the order of 9th september 1944, maybe hungary Order of the Red Star of Merit.

9th: probably DDR, but this is an enigma... (this kind of ribbon seen on the national prize, but with a miniature).

10th: bulgaria, should be 25years of people’s rule, but the white ray is in a weird location.

11th last on the right: mongolia medal for 50 years army ?

12th: mongolia medals for 50years of mongolian revolution, ???? (I know it but can't remind!!!), 60 years of mongolian revolution and medal for the victory of halkhin-gol (created in 1979).

13: DDR: national people’s army medal for good service in gold class (15years)

14: DDR medal for friendship (equal to soviet strenghtening) 1st and 2nd class

15th row: North Viet-nam medal?, Romania: medals for 30 years and 25 year (curious about chronology) of libertaion from fascism.

16th row, last two medals: cuban medal for 20 years of revolutionnary armed forces (see photo in last page of Durov, this not the ganma medal!), the last cuban or african (Mozambico?)

Sebastien:

Thanks for the shot at the ribbons! That certainly clarifies some of them- I'm slowly but surely putting together what everything is!

Now if I could just figure out a way to post up an image the similar size of your posting of Koldunov! (Mine max out at that tiny size!)

What's interesting is that you note that one of the DDR awards should have the miniature attached... His Hungarian Orders of the Red Flag should also have devices attached, but none are, or were ever.

This is something interesting to note... In the 400+ photos I have of Koldunov (99.5% all in uniform from the 70's and 80's) I only have ONE photo of him wearing the Hungarian devices on the ribbons! All the others he has the plain ribbons, even though they should have had the devices. I would guess that he was probably only awarded one set of 'actual' ribbons for the awards, and the rest were just what was 'in stock' at the zavod that made his ribbon groupings later! (Probably didn't carry a large stock of foreign ribbon devices!)

Thanks again for your help!

Must be a mongolian award. I´m sure I have seen it on these.
I´ll look for pics on the web to show you(if I find, of course)

I have bought this bar last year, because of the originality of the suspension.
I had never seen one like this. I think this kind of suspension has not yet be subject of one thread in this Forum...

Front : made of plastic - a kind of thin plexiglass - painted in the back with the colors of the ribbons.
Back : brass, with two pins.

Has someone an idea of the objective of such a suspension ? It is obviously heavier than the classical ones...

Is it only to protect the original ribbons from dust ?
Is it a specificity for displays (museums, ???...) ?
Is it usual to find such pieces ?
Does anyone have such a bar ? (photos ?)

Many thanks.

With reflexion on the "ribbons" part, for better understanding.

Ch.
