Item Description:I am pleased to offer this rare, very historic, and high rankinghand-made Japanese army officers Samurai sword from World War 2. The blade representsthe opportunity to own a gendaito katanaby the famous WW2 swordsmith TsukamotoKazuyuki, also known as Tsukamoto Okimasa, in high end ShinGunto mounts with a tassel on thehandle. The blade and the mountings are in MINTYcondition. It is a healthy sword and has a blade length of 24.75 inches (63cm).It shows a well-grained and tight ko-itamehada. The hamon is an expertly crafted Rai-style gunome hamon that is present the length of the blade ending in a midare boshi. The hamon features hatarakiincluding ashi and yo.

The blade is signed OiteToyama Mitsuru Okina Teinai in the first column and Oshu Iwashiro Junin Tsukamoto Kazuyuki Saku in the second column. The tang is dated Showa Jyu San Nen Hachi Gatsu Hi, or a lucky day in the Fall of1938. Tsukamoto Kazuyuki was an early mei used specifically in Showa 13 by thevery famous gendaito swordsmith Tsukamoto Okimasa. He was one of the most famous and highest ranked gendaitoswordsmiths working during the WW2 era. He was a student of Kasama Shigetsugu,and along with Shigetsugu was known to make swords on the grounds of the famousToyama Mitsuru, an ultranationalist Japanese leader. This is one ofthose swords made at Toyama’s estate. Okimasa garnered widespread acclaim forhis abilities. He is ranked 3.5 million yen in Slough’s Modern JapaneseSwordsmiths (pg. 139 is included in the pictures). Also, the early mei ofKazuyuki is cited in the book One Hundred Years of Gendaito (the excerpt isincluded in the pictures). The sword also comes with NTHK-NPO certificationpapers attesting to the authenticy of the signature and quality of theworkmanship in the sword.

The mountings are high end Type98 Shin Gunto and in MINTYcondition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. There isno fraying. A company grade officer’s blue/brown tassel is attached to the tsuka. The tsuba is classic WW2 with a completeset of eight accompanying metal seppas. The saya (scabbard) is a higher qualitylacquered brown with a textured finish. The saya is in outstanding condition, retainingroughly 97-98% original finish. Thelocking mechanism is present. The blade also comes with a fine silver habaki and a woodenshirasaya to protect its high grade polish. The shirasaya is in MINTY condition. Theblade is in MINTY condition. Ithas been professionally restored with a high-grade polish. There are no nicks, norust, and few if any scratches along the blades length. There is one small coarsegrain along the blade. There are no major flaws like hagire.

This sword is in the Top1% of WW2-era Japanese military swords. Given the high-qualitycraftsmanship, reputation of the swordsmith, and outstanding condition, I highly recommend this piece to acollector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
