1864 Union Document with Countersign - Hilton Head, South Carolina
The presently offereddocument exhibits signs of expected period use, followed by years of reasonablygood storage. Toning is noted across the entire surface, imparting a beige orlight tan appearance to the paper. This toning is somewhat more pronounced atthe edges and along the several period folds (principally visible on theverso). These multi-directional creases seem to indicate that this piece wasonce folded in a pyramid shape, with one end (the viewer’s left) retaining glueresidue that evidently secured the piece. The edges are irregular and verytight, significantly affecting some of the text and Van Winkle’s signature.Fading is noted on all of the manuscript additions, though all are stillvisible upon close examination. Measuring approximately 3 x 4 inches, thispiece would display nicely with views of the noted locations, or a portrait ofLieutenant Van Winkle. Any additional questions regarding condition should beaddressed before purchasing.
