1881-1901 War Of The Rebellion OFFICIAL RECORDS 129 1ST ISSUE Volumes Civil War Here are 126 Volumes from the ORIGINAL (1st issue)\"War of the Rebellion:
A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies.\" First issue set; Government Printing Office, Washington. The Volumes are dated between 1881 and 1901. Only 10,000 copies of this original edition were printed. All Volumes are in their original binding. This particular set had been owned by my grandfather. Often referred to as the \"Official Records\" (or, \"OR\"), this set constitutes the most extensive collection of primary sources of the history of the Civil War. Included are first-hand accounts, orders, reports, maps, diagrams and correspondence from War and Navy Department records of both Confederate and Union governments. The reports contained in the \"OR\" are those of the principal leaders who fought the battles and then wrote their assessments days, weeks, and sometimes months later. The \"OR\" is thus the eyewitness accounts of the veterans themselves. The set consists of 129 Volumes.

From the Preface:

\"By an act approved June 23, 1874, Congress made an appropriation \'to enable the Secretary of War to begin the publication of the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, both of the Union and Confederate Armies,\' and directed him \'to have copied for the Public Printer all reports, letters, telegrams, and general orders not heretofore copied or printed, and properly arranged in chronological order.
Appropriations for continuing such preparation have been made from time to time, and the act approved June 16, 1880, has provided \'for the printing and binding, under direction of the Secretary of War, of 10,000 copies of a compilation of the Official Records (Union and Confederate) of the War of the Rebellion, so far as the same may be ready for publication, during the fiscal year\'; and that \'of said number 7,000 copies shall be for the use of the House of Representatives, 2,000 copies for the use of the Senate, and 1,000 copies for the use of the Executive Departments.\'\"
**Please note that, due to the number of Volumes and weight of the set, the total weight is about 520 lbs. Pick up is preferred.
