69th Infantry Regiment Hat Pin 1898 - Spanish American War
On May 19th, 1898 the 1-69th Infantry Regiment was mustered and federalized for service in the Spanish American war. This is an original hat pin from 1898 worn by a member of the regiment.
The history of the 1st Battalion, 69th Regiment, stretches back to 1851 and the American Civil War. Froma variety of New York City militia companies of predominantly Irish‐Americans, the regiment formed thenucleus around which the Irish Brigade was created and would fight in every action as part of the Armyof the Potomac from the First Bull Run through the Confederate’s surrender at Appomattox. As part ofthe Irish Brigade during the Civil War, the 69th Infantry was famous for its tenacity on the battlefield andearned its nickname the “Fighting 69th” from none other than Confederate General Robert E Lee.
The Irish Wolfhound is known as the Great Dog of Ireland. The Wolfhounds were companions to the Kings of Ireland, and are prominently featured on the original coat of arms and badges of the regiment. The Irish wolfhound is traditionally known to be gentle when stroked, and fierce when provoked. Hence the motto.
The hat pin measures 4 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. The Red of the 69th is actually original cloth.
