$27,000

A Roman bronze helmet of the Buggenum type
2nd half of the 1st century B.C. to early 1st century A. D.The infantry helmet in pristine condition, with no replacements or deformations, dating from the period of the Roman civil wars of the Caesarean and post - Caesarean era until the beginning of the Imperial Era.The sturdy sheet metal, the prominent forehead protection and the very distinct, broad neck guard bear a close resemblance to early helmets of the Hagenau type, which is already characteristic of the early Imperial Era.
The completely preserved, conical skull with neck guard is made of sturdy sheet bronze, up to 2 mm thick, in the tradition of Etruscan-Roman helmets. The lower edge of the forehead and side pieces is angled outwards with a slight downwards slant, creating a flange that projects for approx. 1 cm and extends continuously around to the back of the skull as a rim, up to 4 cm wide, forming the neck guard. One rivet hole in the centre of the neck guard, near the outer edge, in which a loop was fastened for the mounting (there were two other loops on the lower edges of the cheek pieces). A hollow-wrought, conical knob, followed by a narrowed section, which was used to attach a crest, extends directly out from the crown of the skull. There is a prominent indentation on the top of the knob, most likely from a bore hole to insert a peg, which is now concealed under incrustation and oxidation, as is the case in other specimens of this type. Hinge straps made of folded strips of sheet bronze are attached a good 1 cm above the rim to both sides on the inside of the skull with rivets, into which a hinge pin was originally inserted to mount the cheek pieces, which have not survived.
The excellent metal substance is covered with a malachite-coloured patina, featuring lazurite blue spots in places. The patina pitted in places, no spots of corrosion in the underlying metal substance.
Measurements :Height - 21.7 cmLength from the forehead to the neck guard - 26 cmBroadways - 23.8 cm
