An superb Museum quality Antique Islamic Indo-Persian 18th century Mughal India, an Indian Dagger(khanjar), with sturdy recurved tapering, steel blade with a prominent medial ridge adorned on both faces at the forte with Gold Damascened (koftgari) foliage with its integral short steel crossguard richly Damascene in Gold koftgari foliage.
The hilt is in a characteristic Indo- Persian style hilt comprised of grip-scales, rising to a stylized bird head pommel, enclosed by gold inlaid silver straps and gold inlaid silver ferule.
Red velvet covered wood scabbard with jade locket, silver inlaid with floral pattern, celadon jade chape carved with floral pattern similarly as on the locket.
The man for whom this splendid khanjar was made must surely have been quite an important figure in the Mughal Indian society to have such quality dagger
CONDITION: Showing age and usage, hilt with age-related cracks (as common in these type), the red velvet is later replacement
Overall length of the dagger sheathed in the scabbard: 34 cm (13.39 inches).
Overall length without the scabbard: 31.5cm (12.4 inches.
