This is a fantastic complete Confederate foot officer's sword from the famous maker McElroy of Macon, Georgia. This one is a special as they come. It has the full-length 29-3/4th inch blade. Each side of the blade has the distinctive high quality engraving that made McElroy famous during the war and made his product coveted by collectors ever since.The right side is etched "W. J. McElroy. Macon Geo "and it is clear as a bell. It is also etched with a pair of crossed 1stNational Confederate flags on poles. Above these patriotic motifs are fanciful geometric and floral motifs. The left side of the blade exhibits a large panel with the crossed cannon. This probably means the sword was made for a member of the Confederate artillery. On down the blade, it has more floral motifs probably cotton and tobacco and what an amazing job of detail work.The brass guard and pommel cap are both present and the metal has a golden honey color attic patina all over. On the handle of the sword it has the original tarred canvas wrap intact as well as 100% of the original single strand copper wire. The sword is accompanied by the original leather and brass scabbard that is the original scabbard for this sword and is in beautiful condition. It has both of the mounts and rings present as well as the brass drag.
