\'Federation Aeronautique Internationale Gold Air Medal\'.


This Medal was established in 1924 and was first awarded in 1925. It is one of FAI\'s two highest awards. it is reserved for those who have contributed greatly to the development of aeronautics by their activities, work, achievements, initiative or devotion to the cause of Aviation.
Only 70 persons have received the FAI Gold Air Medal from 1925 to 2009.

Obverse: relief of Icarus depicted with clouds behind and an eagle at his feet depicted;

Reverse: a relief of a globe with 4 stars above depicted, embossed text \" FEDERATION AERONAUTIQUE INTERNATIONALE\", inscribed text \"Col. Gen. August KABAKTCHIEV, Bulgarie 1989\".

Designed by E. Blin (Edouard BLIN 1877-1946) whose pieces date from the 1920s-1930 in the Art Deco style.

August Christov Kabakchiev (1914-1999)

Kabakchiev`s family emigrated to the Soviet Union.

The young August Kabakchiev, after graduating from primary school in Moscow, then went on to graduate from the Air Force Academy ‘Zhukovsky’, gaining an engineer degree.

He served 11 years in the Soviet Army.

Participated in the Battle of Halhingol in 1939.
During World War II he served in:
-274-a fighter division of Kalinin Front.
-Fourth Guards Fighter Division in the Battle of Kursk salient.
-64th Guards Fighter Regiment - Operation Bagration. \"
He was awarded many military honors.
When the end of the war came in 1945, he was a lieutenant colonel in the Red Army.
In May 1945 he returned to Bulgaria. (look at the pictures of his Passport from 1945. The passport is for illustration only, not for sale.)

His career reached to the rank of General-Colonel.
His positions in the Bulgarian Army and state system:
-Commander of the Air Regiment

- Deputy Chief of the Chief Staff of the Army.
- Deputy Minister of the Defenseе.
- Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Planning
- Vice president of the International Aviation Federation - FAI.The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) is the world governing body for air sports and aeronautics and astronautics world records. Its head office is in Lausanne, Switzerland. This includes man-carrying aerospace vehicles from balloons to spacecraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles (such as model aircraft and UAVs).

The FAI was founded at a conference held in Paris 12-14 October 1905, which was organized following a resolution passed by the Olympic Congress held in Brussels on 10 June 1905 calling for the creation of an Association \"to regulate the sport of flying, ... the various aviation meetings and advance the science and sport of Aeronautics.\" The conference was attended by representatives from 8 countries: Belgium (Aero Club Royal de Belgique, founded 1901), France (Aero-Club de France, 1898), Germany (Deutscher Aero Club e.V.), Great Britain (Royal Aero Club, 1901), Italy (Aero Club d`Italia, 1904), Spain (Real Aero Club de Espana, 1905), Switzlerland (Aero Club der Schweiz, 1900) and the United States of America (Aero Club of America,1905).
