Born in Bratislava, Peter Rudolf Karl Herbsthoffer studied with Karl Gsellhofer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1834 until 1839. After 1839, he received private lessons in portraiture with Friedrich von Amerling in Vienna. Between 1846 and 1870, he worked in the studio of Eugène Isabey in Paris and regularly participated in the Paris Salon exhibitions. In 1853, he sojourned in Manchester and presented his works in exhibitions at London\'s Royal Academy of Arts.
