SAVH. VOL. GUARDS
BELT PLATE
Great Georgia Militia memorabilia. I believe it\'s from 1830 or around that time and original. If not made in around 1830 most likely was made between 1820 and 1865, so I listed it in civil war period items. It\'s stamped 1802 for the year the guards were formally established. I have no provenance and have onlyseen one other like it on the internet sold many years ago.During my researchI did find an excerpt from a book claiming one found on record that has a matching description from 1830-see first picture below. Measures2 3/4\"x2 5/8\". The bucklehas the traditional design from the pre civil war period. It has the spread eagle clutching olive branch and 4 arrows. There are no stars like you see on many similar militia soldier uniforms, and no e pluribus unum banner. Very rare!
I think it\'s brass but could be other metal; has bronze or copperlooking patina. Some of the pictures aren\'t showing the true color. It weighs 1.8 ounces. It\'s in great condition for it\'s age. I did not try to clean it at all. Plenty of pictures below.
