Navy Military Airport Optical Landing Light System Trailer: Unique & RARE:
$5500.00

Military Navy Optical Landing System(Meatball)
Manufactured by 08R N. A. S. Norfolk, VAMOLS MK10 MOD0J-10300-1
Dimensions (approximate):
Overall Width Closed: 6\'-1\" (75\")
Overall Width Extended: 17\'-9\" (213\")
Overall Length: 10\'-10\" (130\")
Overall Height: 7\'-7\" (91\")[All dimensions need to be confirmed before delivery arrangements are made.]This is a trailer version of the optical landing system that was used on aircraft carriers. The trailer version allowed for training on land based airfields. It has a giant curved mirror at the center. The mirror is surrounded by lights attached to the frame, as well as, two sets of lights that would be placed on the ground.
It has a navy inspection tag from 1973. This tag look much newer than the trailer. The trailer should be older - maybe 1950s to 1960s?This would be a great asset for a military collector, or someone with an airfield and wants to maintain an mid-century military aesthetic. This would also be a great museum exhibit, or a fantastic attention-getting piece at military shows.
It has all of the colored glass lenses (there is one blue lens that is included but not shown in the photos). The bulb size is the 7\" round bulb that was common from the 60s-80s. I do not know the voltage rating on the bulbs. There are three bulbs missing (see last photos). Some of the bulbs may be blown. The pintle hitch is in good order. The hand crank jack works as it should.Brake condition is unknown. The lights on this meatball have not been tested. I was probably connected to an airport generator or other external power supply. (Airports liked to use 48v systems. That is probably what this was set up for.) It is being sold as is.The tires hold air and the trailer can be pulled, but the tires are in a condition that it should not be pulled on the road. It is very heavy, and it must be transported by heavy duty trailer (8,000 pound rating or more), or a car hauler type truck. A winch and ramps will be needed to get it onto the transport vehicle. A rollback would be another option.Photos show the actual item for sale.
