Original Model 1872 Pattern U.S. CAVALRY ENLISTED BOOTS - CUSTER PERIOD Original Model 1872 Pattern U.S. CAVALRY ENLISTED BOOTS - CUSTER PERIOD The Model 1872 Boots differ from the Pre 1872 Boots as follows:1.  The shape of the front top of the boot.2.  Pull straps inside & outside.3.  The use of lasts are foot shaped forms that provide shoemakers with a foundation for building a sole.  Prior to this your couldn't tell the right from the left.  M1872 and pre-1872 used hob nails on the heels.4.  Small size boots were short in supply.  Added now sizes 5 through 12.  These boots are marked on the bottom sole the number 5.5.  These boots have wood pegged soles which are still in use through the Board of Officers recommended brass screws,A contract M1876 pattern boots that have wood pegged soles pictured in BOOTS & SHOES - FRONTIER SOLDIERS By Sidney B. Brinckerhoff, Arizona Historical Society - Monograph No. 7.CONDITION:  All stitching intact.  Boot tops show crazing & wear.  Rest of the boots are smooth leather.  VERY RARE.
