Vittorio Perantoni (nostro padre) e’ il giovanotto in piedi dietro il gruppo, centrato con la bandiera del Fascio. Fu Vittorio a scattare la foto con auto-scatto e fu lui a raccontare di questa visita del Duce in comitiva di quattordici alla nostra “Vineria Italia” a Leopoli.

A RARE PHOTOGRAPH OF BENITO MUSSOLINI AND OTHERS (circa 1929).

Victor Perantoni, was an avid photographer who, at age 18, took this photograph of Benito Mussolini with an entourage, for his father Carlo (bald man with the mustache) sitting third from right in the place of honor next to Italy’s Fascist Duce Benito Mussolini (who is seated third from left).

The photograph is in excellent condition, and it measures approximately 8 ¾ x 6 ⅜ (inches) and it is mounted on a 13 ¼ x 11 ⅛ decorative cardstock, mounted by the original photo atelier “Rembrandt of Lwow” (circa 1929-1930).

BACKGROUND: In the year 1905 grandfather Carlo Perantoni started an Italian wine import-export business, and later he opened a Winery Inn Tavern in the city of Lwow in southeastern Poland, a region which is Ukraine today. It was a well known social Inn frequented by artists, academics, and especially Italian travelers. The inn was named “Winiarnia Italia”, also known as “Carlo Perantoni\'s Wine and Pasta Tavern.” In 1920, prior to the fascist period, Carlo was appointed as Honorary Vice Consul for Italian Foreign Affairs in Southeastern Poland, by authority of King Victor Emanuel III.

In 1929 Benito Mussolini held a luncheon meetingat the \"Winiarnia Italia\"with a small group who admired Italian Fascism. Part of the group was his entourage who accompanied him from Italy, and the others came to meet with him from various regions of Europe. Carlo and Victor served a north Italian pasta lunch and then asked to take this group photo.

Victor arranged the chairs and he lined up the guests. He set his Zeiss-Ikon-Ikonta foldout camera on a tripod, he set the camera on the automatic shutter, then he ran behind the group and stood up on a wine box centering himself withItaly\'s Fascist flag, above the group.Note the \"Fascio di Leopoli\" banner attached to the flag (higher resolution can be seen at [link removed by ] ). Also, Victor’s mother and aunt appear in the window.

This is the only original photograph in existence. It has seen the light of day only a few times since grandfather Carlo evacuated his family from Poland to Italy in 1939, at the onset of the Nazi invasion. Later the Cold War, which followed World War II, prevented our family from returning to Eastern Poland, which had become Soviet Ukraine. In 1950 Victor took his young family to live \'down under\' inAustralia, and years later to the United States, therefore this photograph remained packed away in storage for several decades.

The irony is that our family lost a prosperous wine import and tavern business, a retail wine shop, an affluent eight-unit apartment building, and wealthy bank accounts, all because of the later associations of Benito Mussolini who visited the Winiarnia Italia and stood in Victor Perantoni’s photograph. Vittorio Perantoni, era un fotografo appassionato che all\'età diciotto scattò questa fotografia di Benito Mussolini con entourage, per suo padre Carlo (uomo calvo con baffi) seduto terzo da destra al posto di onore accanto al fascista Duce d’Italia, Benito Mussolini, che è seduto il terzo da sinistra.

BACKGROUND: Nel 1905 nonno Carlo Perantoni si mise a commerciare vini italiani al Europa Centrale. Pochi anni dopo aprì una cantina e taverna nella città di Lwow (Leopoli) nella Galizia Polacca, una regione che oggi è Ucraina. La taverna fu chiamata \"Winiarnia Italia\", e anche conosciuta per “osteria pasta e vino” di Perantoni. Era un locale ben noto e frequentato da artisti, accademici, e sempre visitatori italiani. Nel 1920, Carlo fu nominato come Vice console onorario degli affari d’Italia nella Galizia Polacca, dall\'autorità del Re Vittorio Emanuele III, sotto il Consolato Italiano a Varsavia.

Nell\'anno 1929, assieme con un piccolo gruppo di Italiani, Mussolini venne al locale di Carlo Perantoni per incontrarsi con altri ammiratori del Fascismo provienienti da varie regioni d\'Europa. Carlo e Vittorio servirono un pranzo di pasta e vino, e poi Carlo aveva chiesto di fare questa foto in gruppo.

Vittorio preparò le sedie in schierata e mise la sua macchina fotografica in cavalletta treppiede. Dopo aver sistemato gli ospiti, accese l’autoscatto e corse dietro al gruppo alzandosi su una scatola di vini, centrato con la bandiera del fascio sopra il gruppo.
