For Sale by the Author: Swords of Imperial Japan 1868-1945 Cyclopedia Edition Jim Dawson Japanese Sword
I am the author of two books on imperial Japanese swords produced from the Meiji Restoration until the end of WWII in 1945. During that time period, every government employee who supervised others was authorized to carry a sword, in Japanese culture, his symbol of authority. This means that army corporals, navy petty officers, rank and filecivil servants, foreign office administrators, policemen, firemen, railroad officials, Red Cross employees, etc. from the lowest position that supervised others and everyone above them in the chain of command was authorized to carry a sword, AND each one of those sword patterns was different and distinct from all the others.
In the early 1990s when my son wanted a sword for his Georgia Tech dorm room, I found what I thought to be a “cool” sword at a gun show. It looked European, maybe even naval, but the seller said it was Japanese. Wow, sure didn’t look it! Turned out to be a Japanese Type 32 Army Sword, and now Type 32s are the subject of detailed study in my Chapter 11. Japanese swords are like potato chips, and I soon found myself with sword after sword on which nothing was published. That’s how it all started. My first book in 1997 was the red covered softbound “Swords of Imperial Japan 1868-1945,” long ago sold out. You’ve seen them for sale as used books on . As time went by, I found Japanese swords that I had not included in the 1997 book, and those discoveries led to the creation of the 2007 “Cyclopedia Edition” all six pounds and 447 pages of it with the over 900 color photographs.
Briefly, that’s the story. When most of the research was completed and photographs either taken by me or procured from collection all lover the world, my wife and I spent two years full time putting the book together. The book has met with what I consider to be phenomenal success. I tell people we’ve sold copies in 60 countries, but that was just when we stopped counting. I think we’re approaching 80. Back in the early 2000s, overseas mailing was simple and straightforward. Now, not so much, and regretably, we now have to restrict sales to USA addresses. Chinese buyers had been buying through their USA agents, but now even that has come to a grinding halt. I had to cancel a sale at the Chinese buyers request because his USA agent was not allowed to forward the book to China because it had a Japanese flag on the cover: Lingering animosities; new international tensions.
As I am writing this ad in February 2025, we have about 200 copies remaining. THE BOOK WILL NOT BE REPRINTED. If you do not already have a copy, you are cordially invited to purchase one of the last 200, still brand new and in the shrink wrap. Free shipping by USPS Priority Mail.
Many thanks,
Jim Dawson
