Model 59 Type II Tula Bayonet
Model 6X4
Made in Tula, Russia
Serial #771
IntroductionThere are four recognized bayonet types and three identified scabbard types from this series. In chronological order: The Model 47 Type I (also referred to as the Model 51), Model 59 Type I, Model 59 Type II/Early Model 74 Type III, and Model 74 Type III cover the bayonets; while the Model 47, Model 59/Model 74 Steel Type, and Model 59/Model 74 Plastic Type, describe the scabbards. Some collectors prefer the designation Type I, 6X3, 6X4 Transitional, 6X4, and 6X5 to differentiate these more definitively. The transitional phase bayonets are certainly interesting, as they only appeared in Egypt, Poland, and Romania. These feature a Model 59 Type II pommel with Type I scabbard. That makes them a type of hybrid that reflects the changes also taking place at the time for the rifles to which they attach.
BackgroundOf all the Model 59 Type II bayonets, the Russian Tula and Izhmash 6X4 units are particularly sought-after and are generally considered the epitome of versions for this particular type of device. This is in large part due to the quality and mystique associated with 6X4 bayonets made in the land of their origin. They are also replete with proof marks, which makes them especially interesting.Although very similar to the Russian Model 59 Type I bayonets, the Russian Type II version features a handle that becomes a one-piece affair, with replacement of the bulbous plastic pommel for a squarish metal one. Redesign of the pommel was specifically done because the Model 59 Type I versions had a tendency to crack in the field, especially around the lug channel area.
DescriptionAs can be seen in the photos below, the bayonet in this set follows the standard Model 59 Type II configuration for Russia, or model 6X4, from the Tula Arsenal in Tula, Russia. It features a serial number of \'771\' that has been hand-etched into the the handle as well as on the scabbard at the point where the wire cutter joins the device. The hanger is the correct brown soft leather with a matching keep that has a black steel thorn on the left-hand tab. This is all held together by a pair of metal plates and two metal rivets that also house a D-ring with a metal clip. A kaki-colored webbed wrist strap is attached from the pommel to the cross guard with a metal buckle and rounds out the attachments. This is a typical configuration, which exemplifies a well-documented Russian 6X4 style.Overall condition of this set is excellent. This group has seen some field use, but remains in excellent condition and retains all of its original markings.
