VINTAGE WW2 USAAF A-2 PAINTED LEATHER JACKET NAMED 8th AF WINGS RIBBONS BRACELET. I purchased this grouping many years ago and it has been in my collection long before they were making reproductions. Painted A-2 leather jackets were a favorite of mine when I was collecting. I had many of them. I have sold most of my A-2 leather painted jackets and I still have some with documents included that aren't for sale right now. It's very hard to part with them. This is one that I hate to part with, but at my age I have to start selling more and more of my collection. His bracelet has his name on the front. There is also a tiny compass, his shoulder insignia, a felt 8th Air Force patch, a felt USAAF patch and a USAAF hat badge. JACKET~~ALL OF THE PAINTING IS ORIGINAL AND HAS NOT BEEN RETOUCHED. On the front of the jacket is painted a B-24 and underneath the plane is his sewn name identification in leather, N. G. Ellis. His name was Neil G. Ellis. The back is painted Flying Sad Sack "Neil", the airmen carrying the , bomb and 35 bombs for the bombing missions that he did in Europe. Original tag. Type A-2, DWG, NO. 30H1415. A.C. Contract, NO. W 535 ac-21996, Aero Leather CLO. Co., Beacon, N.Y. Size 40. Zipper is Talon and it works. The inside collar lining is torn in different areas along the collar. The inside lining is also torn around the snap and top of the zipper area. One small tear and tiny holes at the end of the lining near the zipper. One small hole near the sleeve opening. There are also some small holes in the lining. There is an outline in white dots that I can't tell why they are there. Also, there is a mark on the inside lining that goes across part of the lining. It is a fine line. The lining sewing is all intact. The leather is in very nice condition for its age and it is pliable. Of course, the sleeves have the most scuff area, but overall the jacket shows very well -- no rips in the leather. The knitted cuffs and waistband have been replaced. When I got this jacket many years ago the cuffs and waistband were completely destroyed. So to keep this jacket original and not reproduction cuffs and waistband I sent to England from the manufacturer to get the cuffs and waistband redone to the original state when I got the jacket. Please look the pictures over carefully as they are part of the description and ask questions or request more information before purchasing. This is over 70 years old and it is leather so there will be scuff marks throughout the jacket. I am also selling my collection items in other resources, so if the item is removed it's because it as been sold somewhere else. I looked for Neil at the American Air Museum in Britain and I found out he served in the 492nd Bomb Group and the 801st Bomb Group in the Eighth Air Force. I'm sure someone with more computer knowledge than me can find out more information about Pilot Neil Ellis. I also looked at my book BATTLE COLORS INSIGNIA AND AIRCRAFT MARKINGS OF THE EIGHTH AIR FORCE IN WORLD WAR II, VOLUME 1 and on page 121 it tells about the 492nd Bomb Group. According to the book the 492nd Bomb Group during slightly less than four months of bombing operations, the group got pretty well beat-up, losing fifty-seven of its aircraft to direct combat or combat-related operations. On August 11th, 1944 the 492nd Bomb Group, for all intent and purpose, ceased to exist. The group was disbanded, its equipment disbursed to other units, and its personnel transferred to other duty stations. On August 13th the "new" 492nd was comprised of elements of the former 801st Bomb Group. There is so much more, however, I have given you a brief description of his service time. I’m selling my collection that I have been collecting for more than 50 years. I am selling due to my age. This has been in my collection for many years. My collections are in rooms that do not get any outside light. Therefore, you won't find any fading with any of my Militaria items — smoke-free environment.
