This cross was issued between 1905-1918. It features a hollow gold cross that displays blue enameled arms with gold flames between them. The front shows a black enameled medallion in the center bearing a crown on the letter ‘L’ which is surrounded by a white enameled ring in the form of a buckled belt that is inscribed “MERENTI” (Latin for Merit). The back shows a central black enameled medallion with a crowned Bavarian lion within a white enameled belt buckle border with the numbers ‘1866’. There is minor damage to the enamel on the back side (See photos). The bale is crafted from 14k gold with the rest of the piece made from 18k gold. This piece is in very good condition despite being previously owned and would be a beautiful presentation of the seldom-seen decoration. It measures 3 3/8″ long by 2 1/4″ wide and weighs 23.2 grams in total. There is no purity mark, however, it has been tested both electronically and with a non-invasive acid test and tested positive for 18k gold.
