Museum Grade Imperial Japanese Navy Type 96-1 Radio Transmitter and Receiver set. This is the type of radio system installed in the early A6M2 and A6M3 variants of the Zero Fighter Aircraft. The set was officially known as the Type 96ku (aviation) Model 1 voice/telegraph system. This system was the type utilized in Zero aircraft during the raid on Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941. The Type 96-1 operated in the frequency range of 3.8 to 5.8 megahertz.This is the lower end of the High Frequency or Short Wave band. The power of the 96-1 transmitter was 8 to 10 watts in voice mode and 30 watts in telegraph mode or CW for ‘continuous wave’. One of the logistics constraints encountered in the IJN’s planning for Pearl Harbor was they had never operated fighters farther than 90 miles from their carriers with 50 miles being the practical operational limit of the voice radios in ideal conditions. The fighters would be flying about 250 miles outbound on the mission; therefore, it was necessary to develop a training program in the use of the longer ranged telegraph code communication aspect of the radio. This problem persisted in aerial combat in mid-1942 with losses in New Guinea and Guadalcanal. Subsequently the radio systems were replaced by the Type 4-1 Transceiver. Being obsolete near the beginning of the war there are currently three known examples of the transmitter and one example of the receiver. This exceptionally rare set is only the second complete set known and the first, discovered in 2010, resides in a radio museum outside Tokyo, Japan. Overall good original condition with surface scratches, oxidation, and loss of paint. The main dial knob on the transmitter is stuck. The cover of the transmitter is more difficult to remove than the receiver. An overall outstanding addition to any advanced WW2 Imperial Japanese Navy Collection or military radio collection.
