After I got my hands on this piece and it's heritage, I think I reached the modern pinnacle of diplomatic academy badges. It is a pristine example of the MID (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) Diplomatic Corps Academy, graduate badge, 1974-1991.
After all the dust clears and I can afford to eat again:), I think I'll make the obverse my avatar,
As Igor says about his pieces for sale: "This badge is representative of the crème de la crème of the Soviet elite. Established in 1974, the Diplomatic Corps Academy had only a few coveted spots, usually reserved for the offspring of top party functionaries. Some of the graduates were KGB and GRU agents, hand-picked for espionage assignments in the western countries."
So I guess it is still deeply related to the KGB.:)
