Sorry Art, I had to post the link. Im not able to upload the image because of size.
I don't get it, what's so funny about it?
There were namy items manufactured in USSR with export in mind. Look at Soviet watches, optics, machinery - most of them intended for sale abroad were labeled in English.
The fact that it's in English doesn't mean it was to be used in the west. Aftewr all - US, Canada and GB arn't the only countries where English is used. And also the fact that some product has writings in English doesn't have to mean this product was to be send to the countries where this language is spoken. For example Molnija watches which were being sold in Poland were also described "Made in USSR"
IMHO, you need to revise your definition of what a joke is. As Al-Muell and New World have already pointed out, anything that was destined to be exported (or might somehow end up being exported) was labelled "Made in USSR". This is no joke, simply the reality of what was, even if for some of you it does not make sense.
Marc,
I may be well off the mark on this one. I just know that "in the West" this would not have been used as western sources would have been used there. I would like to know where this would have been exported to. Also, You are right, This isn't a joke!!! :idea Instead of the :laff smilie in my first post I should have thought it through and used the  smilie.
