Hello Alfred

Here are a couple for comparison. I think they're good but I didn't buy these from the recipients or their families. As I recall, these are Tbilisi flea market purchases.

These are as different from each other as they are from yours. I've got one of these in my shooting awards collection and the other is with my otlichnik military specialty badges. I think that this is a difficult area to collect these days, not because there weren't many produced, but because of all the fakes. I'm certainly not knowledgable enough to advise in this area, only to share my own examples. This thread is probably the best advice available anywhere today on the subject.

Chuck

Andreas,

It's perfectly genuine, and a less common nickel-plated variation.

Can anyone tell me if this badge is an original, or a fake? Many thanks!
Here is a shot of the backside of the badge. I forgot to mention that this badge came with a replacement screw.

Roy, welcome to the forum. Your pictures could be a little better, but at first glance it looks good. There are a lot of these made. The "rounded" appearance of the obverse and the thin screw on the reverse look good.

Thank you! I'm still learning how to improve my picture taking techniques with the camera, so hopefully I should be able to take better photos! :D Actually, I was somewhat concerned on this badge because of the patina, and that it is an Ebay purchase. I've had this particular badge for about 3-4 years now, and I've noticed the many fakes of these particular badges, and wanted to see if I've been taken to the cleaners.

Thanks again!

Roy,

I believe in this case enamel damage and patina on the exposed brass are an additional indication of its authenticity.

You are right, these badges are very commonly faked.

Danny,

It's a genuine piece. It was established in 1950 and is the last in the serie of "Excellence" badges.

I returned a bad academy badge and exchanged it for this.

Some observations:
1) The red enamel around the S&H is very worn, pitted and uneven.
2) The small triangle, exactly at 12 o'clock, above the white enameled area is not enameled with red (dunno if it should be or not).
3) On the reverse there is a big blob of solder with black gunk over it.
4) The screwpost is skinny; looks like it has been rethreaded from a thicker screwpost.
5) The older, thicker screwpost threads are still evident at the very base; they are coarser than the skinny post's threads.

I'm hoping this is good, and if it is can it be dated at all?
I tried some different camera settings to get different 'looks' of this badge.
Many thanks in advance. :)
